The Languedoc-Roussillon region

With its peaceful contrasts of sun & shadow, history & present, the Gard extends a warm welcome to its little corner of Languedoc/Provence, home to culture and the good things in life.

Around Nîmes, Alès, Uzès and Anduze, you'll find not only a widely varied nature and flora, but also a rich historical heritage, a flourishing, friendly regional culture, and a broad range of outdoor leisure activities.

You can explore the fragrant, shady garrigue, take a refreshing dip in the Cèze and Gardon rivers, hike along the many walking trails, wander through well-preserved forests and paths to visit typical villages and hamlets, stroll through the maze of narrow streets and shaded squares of Uzès, or go shopping in the many boutiques in Alès.

The region of Languedoc-Roussillon features many outdoor markets and festivals throughout the year, a generous terroir, wines with a unique Mediterranean accent, products and recipes full of the sunshine which offers gourmets a sumptuous palette of temptations!

Uzes

Surrounded by vineyards, St Jean de Ceyrargues is a little village located in France's Languedoc region between the towns of Alès (the “gateway” to the Cevennes mountain range) and Uzès (designated as a French “City of Art and History”). It perches on a groundwater hill, and apparently was built on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa.

Within a dozen kilometres of Saint-Jean: Maruéjols les Gardon, a little wine-growing village and its co-op wine cellar, where you'll find some great wines, including their Chardonnay, a gold-medal winner in the 1999 CGA national agricultural competition, The Languedoc's fig capital,

Vézénobres, a charming perched medieval village with an exceptional heritage, overlooking the Gardon valley.

All around and below Saint-Jean, pine glades, wheat fields, apricot and olive orchards and vineyards crowd into a gently rolling landscape that is attractive for walking. Between the Uzès and Alès plains, the limestone massif, eroded by the Droude River and its main tributary, the Candouillère, is broken up into a chain of hills.

There is also a range of tourist activities to explore – leisure parks, museums, and nature, historical, or animal sites – including:

- Trips on the little Cévennes steam train through the Gardon valley

- The amazing, exotic Bambouseraie, Europe's largest bamboo forest

- The Silk Museum at Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort

- The Cévennes National Park, a preserved, enhanced landscape region

- The Haribo museum in Uzès for the delectable history of candy

- A relaxing visit to the Bouscarasse Aquapark for fun and play

- A fabulous voyage by lamplight down the tour mine at Alès

- The Trabuc caves with their enchanting underground waters, lakes and cascades

- The Roman amphitheatre at Nîmes

- Uzès, the “First Duchy of France”, with its conservation sector

- The Pont du Gard aqueduct

- The Gorges du Gardon canyon for canoeing, kayaking and rock-climbing

…and many other unusual features to make your vacation unforgettable!
