The Languedoc-Roussillon region

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Gard region

Nîmes is the capital city of the Gard department with a rich history, dating back to the Roman Empire. It's a popular tourist destination and only 15 minutes from Russan. Nîmes may have been one of the richest and finest Roman cities of Gaul. Several important remains of the Roman Empire can still be seen in and around the town. The Roman amphitheater is the best-preserved Roman arena in France. It is still used today for the occasional bull fight and as a concert arena.

The Maison Carrée is one of the best-preserved Roman temples anywhere and today a small exhibition serves as an introduction to the history of Nîmes. If you're shopping for the flavour of the Langeudoc, Les Halles is a great experience. Over 3000 square meters of local produce in the heart of the historic centre.

Les Halles is a unique and refreshing shopping experience. The 18th-century Jardins de la Fontaine are a beautiful relaxing place to visit and unwind. Tree-shaded boulevards trace the foundations of Nîmes city walls within which you'll find shopping, bars and restaurants to suit any tastes.

The Gard department takes it's name from the River Gardon which rises in the Cévennes National Park, a protected area above the plains of the Languedoc. Maps of the district indicating popular walks are widely available. I

The Uzes / Russan area

Russan is one of the four villages of the commune of Ste Anastasie situated in the heart of the Gard department on the River Gardon, part of the Languedoc region of the south of France.

Russan is a beautiful village ideally situated within easy reach of Nîmes, Uzès, Avignon, Orange and the great Roman aqueduct of the Pont-du-Gard. Russan is an authentic working community where there are occasional celebrations held in the square or outside the church. The area is popular with visitors, both French and international.

There is a boulangerie two minutes walk for croissants, bread, savories, and pastries. The Alimentation across the square provides high quality produce to supplement the supermarket and the local organic produce shop in La Calmette 6k away. The cafe/bar on the corner of the square makes delicious coffee from 6 o'clock in the morning and you can buy a British newspaper there too. There is also a hairdresser and a pizza shop in the village.

A short drive over the gorge and into the hills there is an organic winery, Ocre Rouge where you can buy locally produced red, white and sparkling wine by the bottle or the case.

Activities in the area include Kayaking, Canoeing, Climbing, Walking, Cycling and excellent restaurantys.

The beautiful medieval town of Uzès, is a short drive from Russan. Lively all year round, Uzès boasts annual festivals of dance, music, pottery, truffles, gardening, and antiques. La Place aux Herbes, the main square, shaded by plane trees and enclosed by alleys and arcades is where you can find the renowned market, one of the most colourful and vibrant in the south of France. With a fantastic range of restaurants to suit all tastes, you can take a break from the sights and shops to sit outside for a tasty lunch or a relax with drink and watch the world go by.
