The Languedoc-Roussillon / Gard region

The Languedoc Roussillon region of Southern France curves in a great arc formation around the Mediterranean, from historical Cevennes down as far as the Pyrenees and the Spanish border. The region offers magnificent scenery, clean, uncrowded beaches with warm seas, excellent skiing & other recreational facilities, a richly diverse culture and cuisine and some excellent wines - the region borders on the southern Cotes de Rhone and a climate which boasts the highest annual sunshine average in France.
The Languedoc possesses a distinct character all of its own, quite unlike anywhere else in France. For instance, it has its own language, the langue d'oc, and for centuries enjoyed considerable independance from Paris under the rule of the local Counts.
The Uzes area
Uzes is a spectacular Duchy with a reining Duke and Duchess. Exciting decorator shops, Art galleries, Music festival. Dozens of bars and restaurants... A size that allows to get intimate with the quaint medieval streets packed full of history. A fabulous Saturday Market that takes over the whole town, with not only the freshest produce available, but everything else Provence is famous for. Also nearby is Avignon famous for the "Palais des Papes," its summer festival, its museums and of course its "Bridge."
In Nimes an almost intact Roman arena holds special events from Corridas (bull fights) to musical festivals.
The Pont Du Gard is a 2,000 year old, Roman-built aqueduct of grandiose proportions. One of France's most visited monuments. It can be visited by kayak after a gentle paddle down the Gardon river.
Within one hours drive :
• Arles, Orange, the Camargue.
• Les Baux de Provence.
• Marseille, Aix-en-Provence.
• The Mediterranean beaches.
• The rivers Rhône, Ardèche, and the Cèze.
• Hundreds of beautiful Provençal villages.

The house is spectacular: the rooms are comfortable, the kitchen is wonderful (the villa is home to several cooking schools a year) and the pool is absolutely lovely. What makes the villa so special, however, is its hostess, Amanda Taylor-Ace. She is probably the premier "maitresse" in the south of France, probably in all of France (really). We have been returning to this villa--and to Amanda--for the past nine years, and every year has been an adventure, thanks to Amanda. Because she takes special interests in your needs and interests, Amanda and her villa are not to be missed. |

Guestbook for Maison de Maitresse
The Villa is a wonderful place to base a visit to this part of France and experience the culture, friendship, and goodwill of the French people. Hopefully will return in the future to explore the area further. Armand Petrin, Hamilton, NZ.
After a great but hectic trip on the Canal de Midi, a week in Provence at Maison de Maitresse was just what the Doctor ordered. A wonderful week here visiting the surrounding villages and attractions and eating wonderful food - the best so far at the restaurant next door. Our hostess Amanda is a real treasure and it has been great talking to her and hearing about Provence and the history of the Villa. Hope to return sometime to this little corner of paradise, aptly called "Joie de Vivre". Thankyou Amanda, Au revour & merci beaucoup. Vonda & Warren Clarke, Hamilton NZ
Dearest Amanda - Thank you so very very much for a totally enthralling time - Joie de Vivre parfaitement.! Now we understand why your time in lovely New Zealand each summer is only a part of the picture of life. Merci merci merci - Cecilia xx
Dear Amanda,
Two weeks ago I came with my three teens to enjoy some special time with them and take in the Provencal countryside, its beauty, its food and its culture. You decided in the first 20 minutes of meeting me that I would leave a "changed person". I thought you had some nerve to make that kind of statement. Well Amanda, I was wrong. I am different, I can't put my finger on it, but certainly you were an inspiration to all of us. Southern California has a reputation for being "laid back": however, you have set new standards for being relaxed, all the while running an inn of sorts and drowning your guests in warm hospitality. You and our experience here will not be forgotten. We especially enjoyed meeting and partying with your other guests and various friends. For future guests: We had 2 weeks which was not enough. Rather than suggesting things you should do, I will only say we followed Amanda's suggestions and that was all we needed in terms of guidance. We had one "adventure" or site per day and tried to arrive back for sometime around the pool before the cocktail hour. I suggest you take at least one day as a rest day, just to lay around the pool. The environment is guaranteed to relax. If you wish to discuss further our experience here, please feel free to contact me at dhall@arcturusvc.com Donald Hall, California
Dear Amanda
Thank you for "hosting" our clan at your villas. We had a great time relaxing, touring, and going local via "les amies" a Uzes and the impromptu gig with Jeremy and Michel (and my sibs, and daughter). Dede and I truly appreciated your invitation to join you at Moulins Pont du Gard. What a great place for drinks and to be dazzled by the bridge (although, with a bit more mind-altering it could resemble a scene from "Apocalypse Now"! Warmest regards, Brad McLane, Chicago
