The Monmouthshire region
We are located in the Vale of Usk - between attractive Usk and the bustling market town of Abergavenny .The stunningly lovely Vale of Usk is a wondeful, gentle area of river valley and rolling rich farmland. It contains the historic small town of Usk with its interesting little shops and its many excellent pubs and eateries. Usk is beautifully kept and has a reputation for flowers . It is rightly described as a "floral" town. year after year it deservedly wins Wales in Bloom, Britain in Bloom. Even the fish and chip shop has dispays!
Summer and winter alike see events and festivals not to be missed.
Holiday makers based in the area are always amazed by how much there is to do within a short driving time.
Dont miss Abergavenny ( 10 minutes from Vanilla Cottage) with its international food festival , cinema, theatre and weekly markets. The town is gateway to the Brecon Beacons National Park offering all the outdoor enthusisat could ever wish for. Walking, muntain biking, pony trekking, kayaking or just soaking up the beauty if mountains in all weathers and all seasons.
As a complete contrast you can go underground down a real Coal Mine at the Big Pit. Part of the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre its a fantastic museum with excellent interpretation or the tough, proud life of a Welsh Coal miner.
More of an inclination towards books? Hay on Wye the town of books will offer you dozens of amazing second hand book shops to tempt you. And come at the end of may for a workd class Literature Festival.
In the opposite direction ( 20 minutes from Vanilla Cottage) lies the sylvan Wye Valley and at its heart dreaming Tintern Abbey. Sacked by Henry VIIIs men its remains were immortalised by both Wordsworth and Turner. Not one to miss.
The Wye Valley and Offas Dyke is the border between England and Wales and into the Royal Forest of Dean you will find a plethora of family friendly attractions . Film lovers will want to see Puzzlewood so often the backdrop to movies from Dr Who to Merlin and Harry Potter! Walk a nature reserve or smell bluebells in spring. The forest is glorious.
The immediate area round Vanilla cottage makes it tempting not to go very far!
From our doorsstep you can walk into a nature reserve, stroll along the riverbank ( watch out for otters) and as you are on the Usk Valley Walk you can keep going for many miles!
Our local pub with very good food is about 2/3 mile along the same quiet lane. we are also walking distance of a Craft centre( Craft Renaissance) with a nice cafe, and a golf club ( Alice Springs )with a bar/restaurant open to visitors..
10-15 mins in your car will see you in Abergavenny, 5-10 mins in Usk and 15-20 in Tintern.
If you feel ike the delights of a major city try Cardiff ( train from Abergavenny or well under an hour by car depending on the time of day)
International sporting events from speedway to Rugby ( Fantastic Arms Park and Millennium grounds) , Cricket at the Glamorgan Ground. Cardiff City Premier league football, Ice hockey, or do you prefer the arts> Theatre, Opera, concerts, or watching the filming of Dr Who or Sherlock! - whats your selection?
Golf- 20 courses within an hours drive and under 20 mins to Celtic Manor and the Ryder Cup course.
Spoiled for choice
What are we not so good at? Public transport is not great near the cottage. You really are best to have a car even if you walk a lot once yu have gone somewhere. And we are a bit limited on nightclubs. Sorry.
