Gite | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Worth a stay for the big skies, stunning sunsets and stargazing!!
Le Four a Pain is a high quality gite in a 200 year old longere in the hamlet of Le Plaix. Set on top of a hill with magnificent views over the surrounding countryside Le Four a Pain offers a peaceful, relaxing base for families and couples to explore the Berry either on foot, by bicycle or car. Close to the towns of La Chatre, Culan and Chateaumeillant which all offer both shopping and historic sites to visit. Makes a great base for house hunting - we have an English speaking estate agent we can recommend.
A four star golf course, pony trekking and a lake offering boating, swimming and a restaurant are close by. Within a short drive are the villages of Nohant and St. Severe sur Indre. At Nohant is the house owned by George Sands the famous French author where Chopin lived for some time. St. Severe is the village used by Jacques Tati in his film Jour de Fete. The gite also makes a good base to explore the Dordogne, Loire Valley, Disneyland Resort Paris and Paris itself.

The Loire Valley region
The Berry is a verdant, wooded region with many opportunities for walking and cycling as well as visiting places of interest. Of particular interest is the medieval town of Bourges, Culan with its imposing chateau, La Chatre with its imposing museum and medieval streets, Nohant is the home of George Sand's house with some ancient murals in the church at nearby Vic.
The climate is very temperate in summer and we can get quite high temperatures. In winter it can get very cold with significant snow from time to time. Temperatures are usually warm enough to use the pool from June to early September.
Within a short drive of the gite is the town of Chateaumeillant with bars, restaurants, supermarket, market (Friday) a museum and a tourist wine cellar. St. Severe is a pretty village with bars and a restaurant worth a visit and it was used by Jacques Tati in his film Jour de Fete.
A four star golf course is close by at Pouligny Notre Dame where pony trekking is also available. At Sidiailles there is a large lake with a beach, boating, swimming and walking facilities. An excellent treetop and zipwire activity course(the third largest in France) has opened recently.

"A fantastic week at Le Four a Pain"
I took my wife and two boys (13 and 14) to Le Four a Pain for a week in July 2013. We hired a car in Tours and were provided with accurate directions from Malcolm for our two and a half hour journey there. On arrival we were met by Malcolm and Sue the owners who showed us round the property which was an old converted barn. It is a very comfortable and clean house which contains all the equipment you require for self catering living. There is a lovely large garden at the rear with a good sized plunge pool and sun loungers. There is a barbeque and large table with chairs where you can spend the evening wathcing the sun go down, relaxing, watching the stars and taking in the tranquility of this peaceful rural setting. There is a good supermarket at Chateaumeillant (10 min drive) and a larger choice of shops including a Lidl at La Chatre. There is plenty to see and do within an hours drive. We went to Chatteau Meillant (less than 1hr drive) which was very interesting, We took our boys twice to zip wires and climbing at Sidiailles (less than 30 min drive) which was great fun and very good value for money. The boys also did horse trekking at La Motte Feuilly which was amazing value for money, 17 euro's for two hours. St Severe is also worth a visit. It is a pretty village and location of the post war comedy 'Jour de fete'.
We enjoyed the many short walks from the property which we did every evening and relaxed in the games barn with the boys after our walks. Malcolm and Sue were very welcoming and both take great pride in their holiday let. They stay next door and are very happy to help with advice when required.
We had a fantastic week at Le Four a Pain and would be happy to recommend it to others.

"A restful retreat in the midst of rolling countryside"
We had a fabulous holiday in Le Four a Pain - Malcolm and Sue were very welcoming & accommodating and met a good balance between a providing great source of local information whilst still allowing a relaxing private stay. The property had all the facilities and entertainment we as a family needed and in fact Malcolm and Sue were good enough to supply some extra swimming equipment for the children. The garden provided a wonderful environment to watch the sunset and stargaze before heading to the games room for an evening fixture. The local shops, supermarket and Friday market at Chateaumeillant (10 mins away by car) offered a more local alternative to the comprehensive offerings of La Chatre. Numerous local markets also offer more authentic shopping but a car is most certainly needed to get around. The Lake at Sidiailles is definitely worth a family trip as the water, play equipment, pedalos etc provide a great free day out. Monsieur Raffinat's Cave at Rue de Tanneries in Chateaumeillant is well worth a visit for wine - and seems to be open all the time unlike the others we searched out.
Thanks Malcolm and Sue for a memorable holiday.

"Brilliant Holiday - we will be definitely be going again"
This was our second trip to the Gite and again it did not disappoint. Upon arrival we were greeted with a welcome pack, which was gratefully received. The Gite was as we remembered - clean and well equipped with everything you need. The kids loved the pool and the games room, which also meant my wife and I could also enjoy the holiday. Plenty of places to visit - a nearby lake with beach, Futuroscope and Oradour-Sur-Glane (martyrs village). On other days we just relaxed at the gite. A fantastically relaxing holiday - our second time at the Gite, but definitely not our last.

"One of the best gites we have stayed in - great facilities and a warm welcome."
Sue and Malcolm gave us a very warm welcome. The children made full use of the excellent facilities and discovered some great places to visit in the area. The lake at Sidiales, La Chatre and St. Severe were all worth a visit. A thoroughly enjoyable and restful holiday and we will return.

"A fantastic gite with all amenities to keep families, both young and old happy, and all in a beautiful, peaceful setting"
We visited Le Four a Pain in both 2010 and 2011. Malcolm and Sue are so welcoming and provide a wonderful welcome pack of produce; some straight from the vegetable garden! The gite is exactly as advertised - even better than some of the pictures as the outside trellis is now covered with foliage! We loved the pool and the games room and played endless games of snooker and darts each evening. There are plenty of places to visit; this year we went to Bourges and to the Martyr Village in Oradour Sur Glanes near Limoges - well worth the visit. Nearest supermarket - La Chatre - has everything you need. Also suggest a visit to La Ferme du Duc Noir to see the pigs and piglets (and then to buy some lovely pork and leek burgers!). We will definitely go back!
