Further details indoors

This traditional three-bedroomed house, built at the turn of the last century, has been modernised but retains many of its original features and charm. Downstairs there is a double-aspect sitting room, a kitchen/dining room, a newly- installed cloakroom with toilet, large wash basin and bidet and a traditional 'cantina'. The cantina contains the washing machine and acts as a storage area for firewood, garden furniture and barbecue.

The sitting room is comfortably furnished and has a DVD player, satellite TV (not UK), books, games and DVDs. It is well- stocked with maps, books and literature on the area, its attractions and lots of ideas and recommendations on restaurants, places of interest and activities from the owners and previous guests. There is a log burning stove for winter evenings by the fire.

A traditional balustrade stairway from the entrance hall leads upstairs to a newly- installed shower room and three large double- sized bedrooms, one with a balcony window overlooking the piazza, a second with views right across the Le Marche hills. The bedrooms are comfortably furnished and will easily sleep 6. There are 2 double beds, a single bed and a day-bed.

The views!! The property is right on the edge of the ancient village walls with uninterrupted, stunning views for miles right across the hills to San Marino and to the sea at Pesaro . There is a small garden with a terrace on one side and a patio on the other which, between them, catch the sun for most of the day. Sunsets are particularly stunning.

The local swimming pool is at the bottom of the hill and can be seen from the house, It has three pools, including one for children, a water slide and is clean and smart. As you would expect in Italy, it also offers a good restaurant .The swimming pool is open in the summer only.

Further details

The house and garden are situated above the town wall at the top of the hill. Young children will need to be supervised in the garden so that they do not climb onto the wall, although access can easily be closed off by shutting the cantina door.

Our representative in the village speaks excellent English and lives very close to the property.

The Marche/Abruzzo region

The region of Le Marche is one of Italy's best kept secrets, with scenery and climate similar to Tuscany but without the crowds. The region offers gentle, sloping hills and rugged mountain peaks. The province of Pesaro-Urbino is in the north of the region and includes the picturesque Montefeltro area. There are mountain fortress towns , traditional villages with their markets and festivals as well as a beautiful stretch of coastline, particularly around the San Bartolo National Park, between Gabicce Mare and Pesaro. Pesaro itself combines the charm of an historical Italian city with the sophistication of a smart, traditional coastal resort.

The birthplace of Rossini, its internationally renowned Rossini Opera Festival is held here each summer in August.

Urbino is the highlight of the area with the whole of this Renaissance city a UNESCO World Heritage protected site. The magnificent Ducal Palace is home to the National Gallery of Le Marche and includes works by Piero della Francesca, Titian and Raphael, who was born in the city and whose home is open to the public.

The famous Republic of San Marino is close by, a scenic half -hour drive across the hills.

The weather is generally hot in the summer, warm in spring and autumn (May and September are particularly beautiful) and snowy (cosy) in winter.

Urbino

Montecalvo in Foglia is a hill-top village with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside in every direction .In the village itself there a general shop, a post office, a cafe-bar , a church and a park with a childrens playground and a bird-hide.There is also an excellent restaurant serving local Marche cuisine on the edge of the village, within walking distance and many others in the neighbouring villages. There are books, guides, maps and brochures containing details of restaurants, wine bars, day trips and lists of ideas and recommendations we and our enthusiastic guests have left at the house.

The village of Montecalvo is very friendly and we and our guests are always invited to celebrate Ferragosta in August with a street party, Easter by welcoming the competitors in an Italian cycle race for lunch, an arts and antiques festival in July and a Christmas fair in early December. Every event involves the entire village sitting down to a long and lavish dinner.

The village really is a taste of authentic Italy with friendly villagers happy to talk to visitors, even if you don't speak Italian!

During the year there are many local 'festas' and pageants in the surrounding towns and villages as they each attempt to outdo each other's offerings of local food, wine and entertainment. Just buy a ticket on arrival and join in.

"Disappointing"

Whilst the owners were approachable and good to deal with and the view from the tiny back garden is lovely we were disappointed. We only stayed 3 out of the 7 nights we booked because we felt uncomfo… More

Oh dear! No microwave or wi-fi? But this is a holiday in real rural Italy as the web-site makes clear.Fast food is that morning's foccaccia with fresh ricotta and a tomato! The church bells have chimed for hundreds of years and our guests do sometimes fall asleep to the sound of the villagers chatting in the piazza below when the nights are warm.
The bathroom should always be spotless and had been cleaned. Had this couple mentioned any of these issues to our English-speaking agent on arrival, and who spoke with them several times during their stay, she would willingly have re-cleaned it and shown them the bales of cotton towels, including two shower mats and the woollen rugs, one for each room, which are in the villa. The log-burner, complimentary logs and gas central heating should have kept them warm, together with the bottle of Rosso di Conero we left them to enjoy. Our home is two hundred years old and full of original features which our guests normally love. I am very sorry that this couple did not.
