The Marche/Abruzzo region

Placed between the Adriatic sea & the Apennine mountains Le Marche is an enchanting rural patchwork of old towns, hill country and long, sandy beaches. Medieval & Roman architecture are evident throughout.

Regional cuisine encompasses the truffles, wild boar, robust cheeses of the mountains, tender hams & salamis, olive ascolane (olives stuffed with meat & herbs) piadini (flat bread sold with fillings) crescia ( a richer Urbino variety) and endless varieties of freshly caught fish.

Visit Gabicce Mare to see the stunning Marina, Pesaro for a cosmopolitan, historic beach resort or Ancient Fano for a quieter fishing village atmosphere. San Marino is Europe's oldest republic & offers duty free bargains. Explore the smaller towns & discover what experiences Le Marche has for you. Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the places & moments that take our breath away(Anonymous)

Le Marche offers sea, mountains, unspoilt countryside & an area of Italy fiercely proud of its traditions & customs -with no desire to follow the cosmopolitan crowd !

Urbino

The house is fortunate to be a short drive from one of the'1000 places to see before you die'-Urbino.

Urbino

Urbino is only 20 mins from the house. It is a picturesque walled, medieval city which is a World Heritage Site. The Palazzo Ducale hosts one of the most important collections of Renaissance paintings in the world. Urbino is Rafael's (Raffaello Sanzio) birthplace & the house is a museum to medieval architecture. It has also displayed some of Price Charles' own water colours following his sketching holiday in Urbino. The Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista (a small church with original frescoes) is well worth a visit ,as is the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, which houses many beautiful paintings.

Urbino's steep cobbled streets hold restaurants, pizzerias, cafes, shops & an amazing ice-cream shop. A weekly market, held on Saturdays, sells local produce, clothes & attracts many locals.

Urbania

Urbania is a 15 minute scenic drive from the house. It is a lively medieval town which has a friendly small –town atmosphere & several supermarkets.

Urbania has been famous for handmade ceramics since the 15th century, has an important & historical Opera House ( Teatro Bramante)& churches where renaissance art work is represented. In the chiesa dei Morti 18 mummies are displayed. The Scuola Italia offers weekly classes with morning language courses combined with afternoon ceramics, painting, cooking, football & Italian opera classes. There is a weekly market & many festivals which offer good food, drink & free entertainment. Although Urbania is in a scenic position in the hills, the town itself is flat, making the cobbled streets easy to explore.
