Cottage | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 7
This turn of the century, stone built cottage, 1 km outside the pretty village of Upperchurch was built on land donated by a neighbour with stones carried by horse and trap from nearby Templemore. It has been sensitively conserved & tastefully extended in recent years and now combines the convenience of a sizeable kitchen with the olde world atmosphere of turf burning stoves in rooms which have lasted more than 100 years! It is set along the famous Eamonn a Chnoic Walking loop which meanders around the village in the shadow of Knockalough. The village 'Information Point' will help you to make the most of your time in Upperchurch. Maps, brochures, trail information are on offer as required.
The cottage sleeps 7 comfortably upstairs in 4 bedrooms but can accommodate up to 10/11 with the use of sofa beds. It has two bathrooms (each with shower over bath), one downstairs. One of the two original rooms downstairs has a sofa bed which can easily convert it into a temporary fifth bedroom with it's own turf burning stove! The second old room which contains the staircase and another turf burning stove is a tranquil space in which to relax. A further place to relax is at the end of the large kitchen/living/dining room. Wonderful views of the surrounding hills, fields and trees are to be had through the windows of this room. A south facing patio provides the perfect setting for outdoor eating.
The cottage is located just 4 km from the renowned "Jim o' the Mill's" pub which opens its doors on Thursday nights only to host one of the last authentic house "sessions" of traditional music and song. Coincide your visit with a Thursday night if you possibly can! If you are a musician you can practice up beforehand. There is an array of musical instruments which are available by request: keyboard, guitar, and recorders/fiddles of various sizes.
It may be a long way from where you live to this cottage in Tipperary but once you have arrived you will find yourself at the very heart of Ireland! Tipperary borders Clare, Galway, Kilkenny, Waterford, Limerick, Laois & Offaly! There is no better county from which to tour mid and Southern Ireland! However, if your preference is to escape crowds & enjoy the simple pleasures of walking, hiking, cycling, fishing, river swimming or peaceful lounging in a quiet rural community then this rural retreat, 1km from the village and 17 km from the market town of Thurles is the perfect place.
There is a small TV in the cottage which can be used to play DVDs but it does not have a TV signal. TV and WIFI are available in the local pub 1km away. There are rubber boots, outdoor playthings, a couple of tents and fishing rods/equipment available as included extras. Let us know what you would use and we will make sure they are easily accessible to you!
Bounded by a small stream and backed by a one acre field, this house & its environs will appeal to adults of any age and accompanied children.

"Will definitely return to this cottage!"
We have visited Upperchurch many times before but it was the first time we have stayed in this cottage. The cottage has a modern feel but still retains a traditional cosy ambience. There were 9 of u… More

"A perfect, peaceful place to spend your vacation."
Grainne McDonnell has done everything possible to make your stay one you will enjoy and never forget. The home itself has any convenience you would need and is clean and peaceful. The surrounding area is beautiful and relaxing. If I had to use one word, I would say "peaceful". That's how you will feel being here! There is plenty of space for multiple people. I was there with my husband and our grown daughter. All three of us felt the only problem was that our stay was too short! Plan to be there for at least a week. It is fantastic!
The area is just like in magazines. Lovely. Grainne has a notebook at the house about all local places to visit or where to get what supplies you need.
Even though it is a 'self catering' house, most of the normal supplies you would need are available there (toilet paper, laundry soap, dish soap, etc) We have stayed in other places where these are not provided and it was just a nice surprise! There are even Wellies and house slippers available for your use!
Thank you, Grainne, for giving us a PERFECT stay in a lovely place!

"PLEASANTLY OVER AND BEYOND WHAT WE EXPECTED!"
Every detail was honestly listed in the notice for our Upperchurch farmhouse rental, TEACH GURTNARA, near Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Ireland.
My family reunion was ENHANCED due to the professional care the owner displayed from the very beginning of our connections.
COMING HOME each night after the family busy-ness in town was comforting.
Traveling with my husband, son, sister, in-laws, etc. for this special reunion, our Hostess Grainne went the EXTRA MILE to have bicycles, helmets and fishing poles for us all. There was a basket of FRESH PRODUCE on the kitchen table when we arrived, the farmhouse was clean and BIG ENOUGH for seven (7) of us.
We could have slept four more comfortably.
The mattresses were awesome; all of us slept like babies.
With the working laundry washer/dryer, we were blessed to be able to PACK LIGHT from Alaska, Nevada and California and the views were outstanding.
To have four full bedrooms and two bathrooms with tubs and showers helped get us through our week.
The lane on which Teach Gurtnara lies is beautiful; the forever green patchwork quilt of meadows and rolling hills encouraged our spirits.
Our hikers were treated with a profusion of fresh blackberries and curious cattle in the meadows. Our equine neighbor, Millie, pastured nearby and this Connemara mare was a welcome addition to our stay.
We mean it when we say: WE WILL BE BACK.
Grainne McDonnell is the BEST HOSTESS and she delivered OVER AND ABOVE what we had originally planned. The maps, brochures, local pleasantries, historical music -filled pubs, the friendly Info Center in Upperchurch with a warm welcome from Con and Nuala were especially appreciated after our long trip over the Atlantic.
God bless you all for being honest, diligent and caring to total strangers.
We have ONLY GOOD TO SAY ABOUT THIS WHOLE EXPERIENCE!

"A highlight of our trip!"
The cottage is charming. It has the cozy feeling of an older cottage, yet everything is quite new. The village and environs were great fun to explore. The owner's instructions/guidance are the most thorough we had ever seen. Although we did not have children with us, the cottage is well stocked with things to occupy the kids. We are already discussing our next visit.

"Fantastic family home, beautiful and comfortable"
Each and every family member had enjoyed our holidays in this house. There was everything we needed to keep children busy and happy outside in the garden and inside, with table games and books. The kitchen is great, too. Would love to stay there again.

"An opportunity to experience rural Ireland in a cottage that feels like your own home away from home"
The house blends old and new perfectly - all the character of the original old 2 up 2 down cottage retained at the front and a very sympathetic modern kitchen/dining/living extension at the back. Everything needed provided and all in perfect condition. Lovely quiet location yet only 1km from the local small village of Upperchurch. We were given a great welcome and a great meal in Kinannes pub. Local walking routes are fabulous - well marked and looped covering fields, hills and forest tracks. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend in the house.

"Most Enjoyable Trip to Ireland"
We are from the area originally so were able to use this wonderful house and location as a base for out trip. We stayed 7 nights. The house was bright and welcoming, instructions left were easy to follow and all conveniences worked as described. Plenty of room for entertaining and out children had hours of fun on the swings and playing toys left by our host (nice touch). Weather was terrific so views from the house were excellent. If you destination is north Tipperary then ideal start is Gurtnara

"Cosy, comfortable, clean...a home away from home."
A spacious, comfortable clean cottage that has all the mod cons yet manages to remain quaint and retains a sense of old-style living...a real little gem in a beautiful part of the country side.

"the cottage was comfortable and the town was welcoming"
I highly recommend staying in Upperchurch The historic section of the cottage was maintained while the addition contained all the modern conveniences, including bathrooms, fully equipt kitchen and washer and dryer. Centrally located we drove from coast to coast to coast.. It is the Ireland the tourist have not yet discovered. The cottage had the best of both the old and the new.
