No. 1 The Square
Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
No.1 The Square is a three bedroomed Grade II listed Cotswolds holiday cottage, just three miles from the beautiful market town of Stow on the Wold, in the peaceful village of Upper Slaughter. The cottage provides self catering holiday accommodation for up to six persons and is a wonderful base from which to explore the Cotswolds, being close to the historic market towns of Stow on the Wold, Bourton on the Water, Moreton in Marsh, Broadway and Burford.
Originally a paupers cottage dating back to at least the early 19th century, it (and the rest of The Square at Upper Slaughter) were remodelled in 1906 by the renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. More recently, the cottage has been updated to provide self catering holiday accommodation, but much emphasis has been placed on maintaining the integrity of the building. The result is a magical mix of old and new, modern yet historic; indeed, everything you would hope for from a self catering cottage in the Cotswolds.
The front door opens into a large hall with ample space/pegs for all your outdoor clothing. To the left of the hall is the sitting room with exposed beams, inglenook fireplace and a large woodburning stove (wood provided), there is comfortable seating for up to six adults as well as a flatscreen TV, DVD player, music system (with ipod docking station) and free WiFi. Off from the sitting room is the country kitchen/diner, with an electric cooker, fridge/freezer, Senseo coffee machine, microwave, dishwasher and ceramic sink.
Also on the ground floor you will find one double bedroom, with a woodburning stove (very romantic during long winter nights!), and a large shower room. The shower room also incorporates the laundry facilities with washing machine and clothes dryer.
The stairs lead up to the remaining two bedrooms and main bathroom. There is also a large landing on the first floor which provides an additional seating area – great for quiet contemplation or for off-loading the kids.
The cottage retains many original features and has been painted in muted colours throughout in order to retain it's feeling of calm and relaxation. This is further promoted by pocket-sprung mattresses on all the beds to guarantee a good night's sleep.
Outside is a courtyard with outdoor seating and a BBQ. There is also a small lawned garden.

The Central England/Cotswolds region
Upper Slaughter sits astride the Rive Eye, three miles south-west of Stow on the Wold and two miles north-west of Bourton on the Water. The name, Slaughter, is derived from the old Saxon word, Slohtre, meaning a muddy place, but don’t let this put you off! It is a truly wonderful Cotswold village that remains totally unspoilt.
As well as The Square, there is a Manor House (now the Lords of the Manor hotel), Old School House, tiny Chapel, Village Hall and the Parish Church of St Peter, which dates back to Richard the Lionheart's reign. There was once a castle, but now all you can see are the remains of the motte and bailey.
The local towns of Stow on the Wold and Bourton on the Water provide the essentials: supermarkets, banks, post office, leisure facilities and garage, as well as a wealth of independent shops, cafes, pubs, antique centres and galleries. For a larger centre, Cheltenham is just 18 miles away.
There is an abundance of fantastic places to visit in the local area: wonderful village pubs, incredible stately homes, farm shops, family days out, etc. Whatever you are looking for we are confident you will find it, practically on your doorstep.
There is also an extensive network of walks and cycle routes, with Upper Slaughter joining the Gloucestershire Way, Monarch’s Way, Macmillan Way and the Heart of England Way.
