The Paphos District
Paphos town is strongly connected to Greek mythology and its history. Paphos was the capital of Cyprus under the Ptolemy's, successors of Alexander the Great, when its harbour was a thriving port, and remained Cyprus's first city for more than seven centuries under Roman rule.
It's said that Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love and beauty, rose from the waves and crashed on its shores.
With its winding streets around the harbour area, each lined with a host of mouth watering restaurants and lively bars, places of historic interest, beautiful beaches and a general warm welcome wherever your journey takes you, Paphos really is THE place for a great family holiday.
For places to eat and drink the following come with our recommendation as we have eaten and drank at all:
Bars and Restaurants-
Pathos offers a wide selection of each, all of which are easily accessible either by foot, car or bus. There is a small selection of bars running along the Tomb of the Kings road, which can be located on foot or by car by simply turning left at the main dual carriage way at the bottom of the road- left out of the development. Here you will find the likes of the Pit Stop, Prince of Wales, and further up the road our “local” Yiammas” bar (next to KFC). All of these offer local beers at prices easier on the pocket than the main bars of “Bar Street”- prices are approx 2.50euros for a large bottle of local beer.
The Rugby Arms- a firm favourite of mine, and what I would refer to as my “local”. Graham and Jeanette will make you feel more than welcome and will chat away to your heart's content. Serves decent home- made English food and the local beer is well priced too. A great place to enjoy a beer and watch the sun set over the rooftops of the surrounding houses.
Go straight across the dual carriage way, bear left and go across the waste ground at the side of the car rental place. Turn right at the restaurant, the pub is about 50yds on the right- by the way the restaurant on the right is superb for Meze, I've eaten here on numerous occasions and it's always been great!
Yiammas- another favourite of mine. Located on the TofK road next door to KFC- easily spotted by the bouncy castle outside the bar. A fantastic place to watch the football as they have multiple screens showing a variety of games at the same time. Well priced local beer and spirits and the usual type bar food.
On the restaurant front there are a number along the TofK road, but the following have been used by us during our stays, so do come with our recommendations;
Muse Bar & Restaurant- located in a prime hilltop position in the old town. Approx 15-20mins walk from the house or 5 mins by taxi (8Euros), this is the place to be seen in Paphos. Watch the amazing sunset whilst you enjoy superb food and drinks in one of the nicest surroundings on the island. We highly recommended this place and it has to be part of your itenery during your stay.
Gabor Restaurant- located on Poseidon Avenue in Paphos near the harbour area. Great reviews for this place on Trip Advisor (ranked #02 of 344) whose focus is on French cuisine.
Agapinor Restaurant- located just off Bar St in the centre of Paphos. Ranked #23 of out 344 places to eat on Trip Advisor. Local cuisine and steaks are their speciality.
Tea for Two- nice sized portions and a taste of England- try the deserts! 3 restaurants located in different areas of Pathos- 1 is on the seafront opposite the pedestrian boulevard, 1 is located in the old town area (next to M&S), and the final one is just up the road from the Pit Stop Bar
Fat Mamas- located on the TofK Road, just up from Tea for Two, on the opposite side of the road. Great food and entertainment make for a fantastic night out. Expect queues to get in though!
Chloe's- lovely Chinese food and décor is fantastic!- 2 locations, one being right in the centre of the harbour area in Paphos, the other located on the TofK Road, on your right hand side on the way to Coral Bay. It is positioned immediately after the petrol station next to Oliveto
Fidias Tavern- traditional Cypriot and Mediterranean dishes- located just off the main TofK road as you turn left into Coral Bay.
A must for anyone who wishes to sample good quality Cypriot dishes in a welcoming atmosphere.
Hobo Café- offers decent sized meals such as burgers and pannis and the drinks usually come with a BOGOF deal! Located at the end of the main harbour, area next to the boats. You will also get discount vouchers for your next visit!
Rib Shack- great food, although can be a little pricey. Located on Poseidon Ave, on the way to the water park- turn left at the lights at the bottom of the development road, then 1st right. Go to the bottom of the road, past the Crocodile Pub and turn left again. The Rib Shack is on your right along this road (Poseidon Ave).
For the more “fast food” people among you there are the usual places to visit- Pizza Hut is located on Posideion Ave the right just on the pedestrian walkway and KFC is on the TofK road next to Yiammas bar.
There are too many bars and restaurants to mention along the main harbour area and “Bar Street”, but all are very clean and look very inviting. Bar Street does welcome families and you will find that this is the norm up until around midnight when the “younger” crowd starts to appear. Prices for drinks here are inflated compared to the other bars dotted around the outskirts, but the free Sambukas and After Shocks generally make up for it!
We recommend the following places of interest and activities:
• Mediaeval Fort - The landmark of the town which overlooks the old fishing harbour
• Tombs of the Kings - Underground tombs of the noblemen of ancient Paphos
• Paphos Mosaics - Depicting Greek mythology through the ages
• Paphos Ancient Odeon - Hosts musical and theatrical performances
• Agia Solomoni Church - Underground Christian catacombs
• St. Pauls Church and Pillar - Venerated as the pillar to which St. Paul was tied
• Agios Neophytos Monastery - 12th century monastery and church
• Petra tou Romiou - Legendary birthplace of Aphrodite
• Museums - Paphos District Archaeological Museum, Ethnographical Museum, & Byzantine Museum
For the more adventurous there is the Paphos Water Park with its many slides and attractions. Coral Bay is famed for having one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the island, and with its sparkling clear waters, safe swimming and sport facilities, it's not surprising that it's a favourite with tourists and locals alike. Close by you can find shops, supermarkets, and also restaurants and taverns which serve fresh fish and Cyprus delicacies.
The Municipality of Paphos may provide you with updated information regarding happenings in and around the Paphos area.
