The Kwa Zulu Natal region
Throughout the year, holiday-makers flock to their favorite KwaZulu Natal coastal haunts to cultivate a tan, ride the waves, eat, drink and generally have fun. Besides the sweeping beaches and calm lagoons where surfing, snorkelling, fishing and swimming are enjoyed, you can play golf, bowls and tennis or just soak up the sun.
From Durban, south to the rugged Wild Coast, the highway links popular seaside resorts in rapid succession. The road snakes through subtropical bush and cane fields across river inlets that cut inland from the coast, and provide wonderful birdlife as well a opportunities to paddle upstream along estuaries and lagoons. Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks are renound diving destinations especially for the adrenaline spiking Tiger shark, Zambezi Shark, Hammer shark Ragged-tooth shark and so much more.
The Southern hemisphere summer is an obvious choice but winter is sublime. From April to October the warm Agulhas current which flows south a few kilometres form the coast, maintains the water temperature at a pleasant 25 degrees C. Swimming is safe with protection afforded by one of the most comprehensive shark netting systems in the world. A sub-tropical climate with summer temperatures hovering around 30 degrees C , high humidity and summer rain showers. Winter temperatures rarely drop below 18 degrees during the day and the dry season means warm calm days and cool nights.
The" Sardine Run" along the south coast is one of the most remarkable natural wonders. Every year between June and July shoal upon shoal of sardines follow the cooling water inshore. In their wake they bring large flocks of sea birds and , for the anglers crowding every vantage point, thousands of game fish.
Umzumbe - is not one of those typical seaside resorts. It's a little piece of paradise for those in the know. Permanent residents are growing in number as the charm of this village casts its spell from the first time you visit. Unpretentious and free of the trappings of urban life, a holiday in Umzumbe regenerates body and soul. Leisurely strolls around the village, brisk walks along the beaches, daydreaming over the blue horizon and swimming in the exhilirating Indian ocean.
There is a small shop for the daily paper, bread and milk, but supplies can be obtained from the closest shops 4kms away in Hibberdene, or further south towards Port Shepstone and Shelly Beach which offer extensive shopping opportunities, restaurants and cinemas. Sally's Homemade Meals in Umzumbe also gives you the option of homely pre-prepared meals to heat up at your conveniance. For entertainment and pub-style dining, the local Rock Bottom Bistro in Umzumbe is relaxed and a perfect spot to get to know the locals. Too many to mention, there are a variety of day drives and places to explore, all listed in the local "Southern Explorer" available everywhere.
