Home description
Wake up in your top floor apartment and look out of the window across the roofs of medieval Montone to the sun drenched hills beyond. Make breakfast in the well equipped kitchen or take a two minute walk to the local café for a cappuccino and brioche. That is the start of a typical day at La Casa degli Olivi.
Discover the delights of living, if only temporarily, in a wonderfully restored medieval hill town in northern Umbria, in this beautifully appointed apartment situated in the historical part of Montone. With a friendly bar and café in the main square and three restaurants within the medieval walls of the village, plus a small grocery store and post office, Montone has all the essentials for a comfortable holiday and the benefit of just a short walk home after dinner! However, just a 10 minutes drive away there is an excellent supermarket and other shops in Umbertide, and a wealth of other good restaurants in the area. Montone is also very well placed for easy day trips to famous Umbrian and Tuscan places such as Perugia, Assisi, Cortona, Citta di Castello, Gubbio and Sansepolcro.
Montone is not generally too busy or noisy and situated on the top floor, the apartment is a quiet and tranquil place.

The Umbria region
Umbria is an ideal location for a holiday, for couples and for families. Generally quieter and less hectic than its neighbour, Tuscany, the area offers some of the most beautiful countryside and best walking in Italy, among the rugged hills and lush valleys which have won Umbria the title of 'the green heart of Italy'.
Discover the art, architecture and history of the region's mediaeval towns; Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto, Todi, Orvietto, Citta di Castello and, just 20 minutes away from La Terra del Nomade, the renaissance jewel of Perugia. As well as these famous cities, you can explore the fascinating mediaeval hilltop villages that dot the landscape – like Montone itself, Monte Santa Maria Tiberina and Bettona.
For a change of scene, the beaches and marinas of Lago Trasimeno, Italy's fourth largest lake, are only 30 minutes away.
There are a wealth of festivals in the region with almost every city and town holding a music festival, a mediaeval pageant, an artisans' market or a special fiesta through the holiday period. Even the weekly markets are great fun to go shopping or just people watch.
Umbria, and neighbouring Tuscany, are the foremost regions of Italy for traditional country cooking, noted for wild game, mushrooms and truffles. Whilst many restaurants specialise in simple but delicious local dishes, there are of course many excellent pizzerias and some gems of gourmet cuisine to be found. The great vineyards of Montefalco, Montepulciano and Orvieto are within easy reach and some great local wines to sample.
Montone area
Montone is an absolute delight. Hidden from major roads and protected by massive walls, the village is rich in tradition and culture, preserving medieval Italy within its walls. Hardly ever mentioned in guidebooks, it is not flooded by tourists and retains a really special ambiance.
A wander around the quiet, narrow streets takes you back to the Middle Ages. The gothic style Chiesa of S. Francesco dates back to the early 14th Century and the oldest church is the Romanesque Pieve of S. Gregorio, from the 12th Century. The main square is a delightful place to sit and soak up the atmosphere whilst sipping a cappuccino at the café.
Perhaps you would like to plan your stay to take in one of Montone’s many festivals and events. In early May there is an ironwork market and then the season really gets started with the Montone Umbria Film Festival in July. The Donazione della Santa Spina, when the town is transformed back to medieval times, is in August and in October is the Festa del Bosco, a market celebrating food and crafts.
There are 3 restaurants and a small grocery store in Montone itself. Umbertide, the nearest main town, will be the place to visit for supermarket and other shopping. There is an excellent Coop supermarket stocking everything you might need plus excellent butchers, traditional greengrocers, a fresh pasta shop, delicatessen and the best pastries and ice cream you can buy. There is also a great weekly market.
