Home description

When you approach La Terra del Nomade you realise how superb the location is – a tranquil and beautiful setting in which to unwind and recuperate from today's busy life. From a quiet country road you turn up a short 'strada bianca' winding uphill to the property, which has 360 degree views of rolling hills and fields, dotted with the occasional farmhouse. Once the home of Umbrian farmers, the buildings have been sympathetically renovated to conserve some of the original architectural elements while reinterpreting others in a more contemporary flavour.

The farmhouse has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, with a large lounge, separate kitchen/dining room and another living room with the third bedroom on the top floor. Ideal for 6, the house can accommodate 8 with a sofa bed in the top floor living room. Outside is a pool surrounded by a large terrace.

The Umbria region

Umbria is an ideal location for a holiday, for couples and for families. Generally quieter and less hectic than its neighbour, Tuscany, the area offers some of the most beautiful countryside and best walking in Italy, among the rugged hills and lush valleys which have won Umbria the title of 'the green heart of Italy'.

Discover the art, architecture and history of the region's mediaeval towns; Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto, Todi, Orvietto, Citta di Castello and, just 20 minutes away from La Terra del Nomade, the renaissance jewel of Perugia. As well as these famous cities, you can explore the fascinating mediaeval hilltop villages that dot the landscape – like Montone, Monte Santa Maria Tiberina and Bettona.

For a change of scene, the beaches and marinas of Lago Trasimeno, Italy's fourth largest lake, are only 30 minutes away.

There are a wealth of festivals in the region with almost every city and town holding a music festival, a mediaeval pageant, an artisans' market or a special fiesta through the holiday period. Even the weekly markets are great fun to go shopping or just people watch.

Umbria, and neighbouring Tuscany, are the foremost regions of Italy for traditional country cooking, noted for wild game, mushrooms and truffles. Whilst many restaurants specialise in simple but delicious local dishes, there are of course many excellent pizzerias and some gems of gourmet cuisine to be found. The great vineyards of Montefalco, Montepulciano and Orvieto are within easy reach and some great local wines to sample.

Umbertide / Pantano area

Umbertide, the nearest main town, will be the place to visit for supermarket and other shopping. There is an excellent Coop supermarket stocking everything you might need plus excellent butchers, traditional greengrocers, a fresh pasta shop, delicatessen and the best pastries and ice cream you can buy. There is also a great weekly market selling clothes, shoes, linens, toys and many other things as well as the traditional vegetables and fruit.

Whilst most of Umbertide is modern there is a delightful historical centre, situated right on the banks of the river Tiber, with a 14th century fortress or 'Rocca' dominating the ancient walled town and a striking 16th century octagonal church in the main piazza.

There are many excellent restaurants in the area, wine tastings available at the Girasole vineyard just north of Umbertide, local honey and olive oil to purchase nearby, some excellent walks and hikes in the surrounding hills and fascinating hill top villages to explore.

The spacious lounge (7.2m x 4.5m) has a two seater settee, 4 lounge chairs, a large cabinet and open fireplace.

The separate farmhouse style kitchen/dining room has a large table with 6 chairs plus a two seater wicker sofa. The kitchen is well equipped with an electric oven, 4 ring hob, microwave, dishwasher and fridge/freezer. Both the lounge and kitchen/diner have lovely views of the surrounding countryside.

From the lounge a short flight of steps leads into a short corridor with two double bedrooms (each 5.0m x 3.5m) and two bathrooms. One bedroom has a double bed plus a single day bed with an en suite bathroom with shower. The other bedroom has a double bed and an adjacent bathroom with shower. Both bedrooms overlook the pool. The bathrooms are very modern with basin, toilet, bidet and shower unit. On the top floor is a third bedroom, bathroom (with bathtub) and another living room.

The rooms are spacious and airy with stone or tiled floors, wooden beams and ceilings, and many little artistic touches from niches containing urns and pots to making use of old doors and shutters as coffee tables and unusual bed heads. The furniture is a comfortable mix of older and contemporary pieces, the decor simple and relaxing.

Further details outdoors:
The property consists of the original farmhouse (parts dating back to the 15th century), plus two outbuildings. A large (14 x 6 metre) swimming pool is located conveniently in the centre of the buildings, surrounded by 150 square metres of stone paved patio with chairs and loungers, mostly in the sun but there is also a covered area. The swimming pool has an unusual earth coloured coating which helps to integrate it well with the rural surroundings.

There is a resident caretaker living in one of the small outbuildings.
