Enquire nowThe West Country / Devon region
North Devon is an unspoilt area of rolling hills and beautiful clean beaches. The nearby resorts of Saunton, Croyde, Woolacombe and Westward Ho! have become a Mecca for the surfing community. The more traditional 'bucket and spade' sandy family beaches at Ilfracombe, Instow and Combe Martin are also not to be missed.
For the country lover there is Exmoor National Park a 10 minute drive away with it's fabulous walks such as the North Devon Coastal path. Local wildlife can be spotted such as buzzards, owls, deer and of course the Exmoor ponies. Nearby there are largely undiscovered atmospheric inland towns and villages such as South Molton and Torrington. This is where you'll find the 'real' Devon where life still revolves around their respective livestock and farmers markets.
The Umberleigh / Chittlehampton area
Chittlehampton is a lovely unspoilt North Devon village. It has it's own Pub and Post Office/shop. The Pub is central to the village serving locally sourced food and drink that doesn't cost the earth. It is child friendly with an outdoor play area complete with Alpacas! Facing the pub across the village square is the village church. a place of pilgrimage in the middle ages dedicated to St Hierthra.
Local attractions include The Big Sheep, The Milky Way, Exmoor Zoo, Cobbaton Combat Museum and the Tarka Trail. For the golfers there are plenty of courses to choose from with the nearest at High Bullen approx 2 miles away.
For the garden lovers there are the RHS Rosemoor gardens at Torrington, 20 mins drive away while TV's Carol Klein's Glebe cottage nursery is within walking distance. Just down the road, the gardens at Filleigh, home to the Duke and Duchess of Arundel are also open to the public. Further afield there is the Eden Project in Cornwall which is a great day out.
Local festivals include the Oceanfest at Croyde and of course the North Devon show, held near Torrington.
A short drive away is Barnstaple with it's shops and famous Pannier market. A little further afield there is the picturesque City of Exeter for a great day's shopping.

Family of four with two adult sons, stayed late July 2012. Good, large house in a quiet location but within easy reach of South Moulton and the coast. We had fantastic weather and used the barbecue, outside dining area and large garden extensively. The garden is not overlooked and was ideal for sunbathing late into the day. The two bathrooms are clean and new and good for larger groups. Nice pub within easy walking distance, good, reasonably priced food, good selection of beers and a friendly landlord. Limited internet access via 'hot spots'. A car is essential but there is ample parking space for two or more cars and there is a good pub with excellent food at nearby Chittlehamholt. Highly recommended accommodation for a quiet time away from it all. |
