High Bield was built in the 1920s by the artist, Ann Macbeth. It is a detached house in a spectacular location sitting high above the beautiful village of Hartsop at the foot of the Kirkstone Pass. The house and garden have superb views of the hills around and the valley below. The house is warm and cosy and was recently refurbished. It has an electric central heating system as well as a wood burning stove in the sitting room. The kitchen is well appointed with dishwasher, microwave and electric oven and hob. There is a downstairs shower room and an upstairs bathroom. Bedlinen is provided but we do ask that visitors bring their own towels unless they want to order them in advance. The house is an excellent base from which to walk – around Angle Tarn, on to the High Street ridge, or over to Fairfield and St Sunday Crag.

The nearest shops can be found in Patterdale – it has an excellent post office that sells newspapers and home made bread amongst other things - and Glenridding.

The garden is on a hillside and therefore steep in places. Very young children need to be supervised.

A farm track leads up to the house. Please take care when driving a low vehicle.

Further details outdoors

Getting to High Bield can be something of an adventure, particularly in winter. The house is accessed by a track which goes through fields. It's well worth it for the spectacular views and sense of seclusion. There is a garage which can take a car and parking for another 2. The garden is wonderful but steep and young children should be supervised at all times.

Further details

The house has two double bedrooms and a generous shower room on the ground floor. Upstairs there are two single rooms, a twin room with wonderful views over Brotherswater and the Ullswater valley, with Ullswater itself in the distance. There is also a family bathroom upstairs.

The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District is one of the most spectacular places for hillwalking in England. Each valley has its own identity and the geological features, farms, landscapes and local people bring a rich diversity of interests and beauty to the area.

Ullswater

The coast to coast walk passes along the nearby footpaths. Glenridding Sailing Centre is a great base from which you can hire sailing boats and windsurfers on Ullswater. Amazing walks are on the doorstep - High Street, Hellvellyn, Place Fell, St Sunday Crag, Fairfield.

"Fantastic location & views, very cosy and comfortable cottage"

We have been on holidays to the Lake District every year for the past 12 - 13 years, staying in different cottages in various parts of the Lake District. High Bield exceeded our expectations in every way. In a quiet location and off the beaten track, High Bield has all mod cons , yet retains it's unique traditional cottage features.
During our stay we had really heavy snowfall which stopped us using the track up to the cottage. The snow drifts in places on the track were between 2 - 3 feet deep. This was too deep even for most 4 x 4's including ours! Even the entrance to the village was cut off due to the 5 feet snow drifts! The locals in the village were very friendly and gave us permission to park in their parking area down in the village. We did manage to hike to the Post Office in Patterdale for supplies to keep us going. It was an adventure and hard work through knee deep snow. The cottage with the log burner was very cosy with the blizzard outside. It was very picturesque and our first experience of snow in the Lakes. High Bield is a beautiful place to stay and we would recommend it. We will definitely be returning in the future.

"Beautiful cottage with spectacular views"

Two families stayed at this beautiful cottage four adults and four children from 7 years to 14 years. The veiw from the cottage is very dramatic and you can start your walks friom the door. We saw badgers and deer wondering around when the sun went down. The local pubs are great. We had a great night in the Brotherswater inn on New years eve.
The cottage has a lovely old feel about it but with all the mod cons, clean, spacious, warm and plenty of hot water. Wonderful.

"A fabulous week in a lovely house"

High Bield is a beautiful house in a dramatic setting. It has been fitted out to a very high standard and wants for nothing. We return year after year and love it. There are numerous interesting walks from the front door and the views have to be seen to be believed..

"Best ever self-catering property we have stayed in"

The best holiday cottage ever, extremely well equipped with everything we needed, absolutely fantastic, brilliant position with fabulous views - wish we could have stayed a few more weeks. Did hill walking every day from the cottage. We will definitely be coming back.
