The Cumbria/Lake District
The Lake District conjures up images of magnificent mountains and shimmering lakes and that is exactly what visitors find here. In fact the whole county of Cumbria is home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery.
This region has been a favourite all year round holiday destination for years and apart from its natural beauty it's also packed with lots of attractions and activities that cater for every kind of holidaymaker, from family holidays to romantic breaks for couples and from those who are looking for lots of activities and sports to those that prefer more gentle country pursuits.
The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family.
The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base.
Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes.
Windy Nook is nestled in the heart of Pooley Bridge at the edge of the second largest lake in the district of Ullswater. Pooley Bridge is home to the famous 16th century Bridge of Eamont as well as the nearby Dunmallard Hill, one of many ancient sites located close to this cottage. The village itself has tea rooms, souvenir shops, three good pubs and access to the Ullswater steamers which offer cruises along the lake and have been doing so for almost two centuries.
Outside of the village, this area is dotted with some of the Lake Districts most scenic walks, from lakeside ambles to challenging uphill climbs. Towards Glenridding the stunning Aira Force waterfall can be visited and further afield the towns of Penrith and Keswick offer shopping and amenities to satisfy all.
