The Varmland region
Varmland In English this means "warm land" and this part of Sweden is known for its warm and beautiful summers with long, long evenings and stunning landscape.
It is a wonderful place for a relaxing holiday with children or without. Everywhere you find lakes and rivers where you can swim and you can freely explore beautiful pine forests and rolling hills, on foot or by bike, stopping for coffee and a bite to eat at the little traditional coffee houses or local folk museums ("Hembygdsgard") along the way. Here you can see how people lived here from ancient times and see and buy hand-made crafts.
There are many outdoor activities, summer fairs and music festivals and places to visit. The local tourist office can keep you informed of what's on and where.
Local heritage sites include the homes of author Selma Lagerlof (world famous novelist and Nobel Prize winner) and poet Gustaf Frodin.
There is a bear park at Orsa, 200 kms away, and Father Christmas's summer residence ("Tomten i Halla") at Forshaga.
Uddeholm / Hagfors area
Local Art Gallery and museum 5 mins walk, restaurant 2 kilometres, Klaralven Riverside Bike Route (“50 miles of carfree asphalt”) 3 km away. Lakes, rivers, forests, meadows all around.
Local attractions include Wildlife Park, Waterpark, Torsby all-year-round ski-tunnel, Uddeholm Golf Course, swimming, horse-riding, hunting, fishing, boat hire, canoeing, river-rafting and much more. Music, craft fairs and cultural festivals and activities all year round in the Varmland region.
There is a tourist centre in Hagfors, the local town, (5 km away). Hagfors has four supermarkets, several restaurants and pizza places as well as a good number of local shops, a sports centre, a disco, a hospital and museums.
Hagfors Local Airport (5 km) has daily flights to and from Stockholm . Karlstad has a railway station and an international airport, a university, cinemas and shopping centres and is one hour's drive away. There are regular local buses stopping off at Uddeholm.
How to get there
Uddeholm is 5 km from the town of Hagfors which is 90km from Karlstad, right in the centre of Sweden.
Hagfors has its own tiny airport and a regular little plane that flies (2 flights a day) to and from Stockholm Arlanda airport (except July, when it takes a holiday!) – 45 minutes – at a very reasonable government-subsidised price (www.nextjet.se). Taxis can be ordered to meet visitors at the airport, which is 5 minutes from the apartment.
Karlstad airport serves the wider world via Copenhagen and also has regular flights to Stockholm. Stockholm airport is a hub and serves the whole of Europe and elsewhere.
Karlstad Central Station has hi-speed trains to Oslo in Norway as well as Gothenburg and Stockholm with local trains to the rest of Sweden.
Ryanair flies to Gothenburg, Stockholm (not Arlanda - about an hour's bus ride from Stockholm) and Oslo Torp in Norway from the UK. You can get a train from any of these places to Karlstad (approx 2.5 hrs) and hire a car there, or drive direct (from 3 - 5 hours).

There is a barbecue and lots of space for children to play. The setting is peaceful and secluded, surrounded by meadows with grazing horses from the next door riding stables. The area is known as Stjarnsfors which means "Star Rapids". There is a museum half a kilometre away showing the ironworks that used to be the centre of Uddeholm's economy until quite recently. Nowadays the steel industry is still going strong in Hagfors, and retains the Uddeholm name. You can hire a railway bike-trolley at the museum and pedal alongside the river to Hagfors along the old railway track, visiting the railway museum at the other end of the track. Interestingly, Buzz Aldrin, one of the Apollo astronauts, was born just nearby.
