Villa | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Are you looking to enjoy your own taste of paradise? Look no further than Harvest Moon.
Nestled on the edge of the ricefield with an uninterrupted view across stalks of waving green grass, Harvest Moon has been designed with loving care and attention.
Enjoy the setting sun over the jungle and a glimpse of extinct volancoes from your balcony in the upstairs bedroom.
Or step straight from the downstairs bedroom in to the infinity pool, swim to the bale and eat breakfast on the huge day bed. At night the bale transforms into a cute little nest with a double bed and soft drapes at the foot of the ricefields.
To get to the bath you'll have to cross the fishpond which surrounds the tub before sinking in and relaxing. Or use the shower which is surrounded by lush jungle foliage in the second bathroom.
Each morning your friendly, unobtrusive staff will prepare you breakfast from the fully equipped kitchen.
After that you can sit, stretch, curl up, snooze, cuddle or rest amongst all the little corners and cushions throughout the house.
Harvest Moon comes with wifi, towels, a full kitchen, pool, 2 beds, 2 bathrooms and an outdoor bale with a third double bed. Donna Karen inspired handmade furniture, sumptuous lighting, quiet, friendly waitstaff and an onsite manager are also there to help you relax.
Nannys, recommendations for massage, yoga classes and other modalities, motorbikes, cars with drivers and tourist information is all available on request. If there's more you want then just ask!
We've also been featured in a design blog and a model shoot.
The silver boxes you'll see at Harvest Moon were featured in a model shoot done on location:

Wellness and Other Stuff
Ubud is renowned as a centre for yoga, natural therapies, organic and raw food, and other interesting stuff. The healer from “Eat, Pray Love” lives close by to Desa Bulan as does another healer which the locals recommend (just ask the staff).
Being in the tropics is often great for rejuvenating in itself. The heat may take a little while to get used to – use it as an opportunity to slow down from your busy life. Drink more water, take more naps, get massages in the heat of the afternoon and you may find that you will effortlessly start to lose weight, your skin become clearer and you'll slip in to a more relaxed pace of life.
Massages can be a little hit and miss in Ubud. Our favourite masseuse is Nyoman Surpasa, one of Ubud's best massage therapists. One of his staff will come to River Moon with his own portable massage table. Massages for an hour are 250,000Rp with Nyoman, or less with his staff. They charge a small fee for coming to your villa. You pay him directly. ph: +62 812 3 600 9610. Or you can visit him: his Iman Spa is one of the highest rating on Tripadvisor. It's 63 Sri Wedari, just north of Jl Raya. If you don't have transport he will pick you up at your villa.
Yoga is everywhere in Ubud. Two of the most popular are the Yoga Barn and Taksu Spa. You can also try Radiantly Alive or contact Rachel Hull of Shakti Spirit Yoga Training, an excellent teacher who runs teacher-training courses.
You are in Bali, in the tropics, surrounded by rice fields. Nature is now a lot closer than it is from your apartment…
Expect to hear the sound of frogs and the eh-oh of lizards, see fireflies, storks and bats, and expect the occasional mosquito and/or spider. The frogs and lizards are especially cute – look after them as they eat the mosquitos.
Rice growing is the essence of all Balinese life. Each of the five phases (preparing, planting, growing, harvesting, fallow) are different and yet fascinating in their own way. You might be staying at River Moon when the paddies are water filled like lakes, when noisy cultivators are at work, when villagers are shooing small birds away from ripe crops or during months of vivid green all the way to the horizon. Watching the locals work the fields is an enchanting scene.
When it rains here it can really pour! If that happens close all the doors to the living room, close the windows to the day bed and put down the bamboo blind. Often the humidity will build up through the day until the afternoon when it will rain about the same time every day and afterwards it will be cooler and more pleasant.
Gay and Lesbian Travellers
Bali is one of the most tolerant gay and lesbian destinations in the world. While homosexuality is accepted, displays of affection in general, whether straight or gay, is not considered appropriate.
Out and About
So now that I'm all settled in, where can I go? Is it safe to eat the local food? Is it OK to hire a scooter or should I get a car and a driver? And what am I going to do with the kids?
Food in Ubud is awesome. Entire books have been written just about the food in Ubud – from delicious satay bought on the side of the road for $1 through to a degustation menu for $200pp ++ at one of Asia's best restaurants. There are so many good restaurants in Ubud. Here are some of our favourites:
I love to eat the local food. It's cheap, fresh and tasty. There are buttery cubes of home made tempeh, fresh greens, real curried eggs, jackfruit curries and other tasty treats. Called Padang, it's the local food from Sumatra and can be recognised by the plates of food piled up in the windows. It's very cheap at around 20-40,000 Rp per person
Traditional Indonesian fried rice (nasi campur)
This is available in hundreds of local cafes (warungs) around Ubud. The best is Warung Teges on Jalan Teges, Teges. Rp20,000 per person.
Traditional Balinese suckling pig (babi guling)
Ibu Oka has been featured on international TV programs and is famous for daily suckling pig is at two locations: off Jalan Suweta in central Ubud, and a large modern restaurant on Jalan Teges, Teges (a 10 minute drive from River Moon). Rp30,000 per person. A cheaper (and more 'authentic') version is available at the Lodtunduh village junction from Ibu Dayu. Rp15,000 per person.
Organise your own Traditional Balinese Feast
Call Wayan Suriani from the village to cook for you - her menu is in this information pack. It's something I look forward to every time I come to stay and a great way to treat new friends. She makes a fresh home made feast of traditional Balinese food to order. Call her the day before to order your food. She will deliver it when you wish. ph: 081 337 375 227
Siam Sally for excellent Thai food in a lovely environment on Jalan Hanoman, Pengosekan. Excellent cocktails. Main courses 50,000 - 100,000Rp
Healthy Hippy Food
Kafe has a wide range of largely organic and vegetarian food and excellent juices on Jalan Hanoman, Ubud. They also have an outlet, Little K, at the Yoga Barn, Jalan Hanoman, Ubud. You can also get home-delivery
Clear Cafe has amazing juices, drinks and delicious organic and raw food on Jalan Hanoman, Ubud.
Warung Sopa which also has a small but high quality organic stall on Sunday mornings between 9-1pm serves delicious food: brown rice with a selection of vegan, vegetarian and fish dishes. It's also a great place for kids and can be found on 36 Jl Sugriwa.
Ryoshi for sushi and sashimi on Jalan Hanoman, Ubud. Two people can eat well for 400,000Rp.
Bridges Bali is wonderful for a special occasion or romantic dinner. Really beautiful atmosphere and service. They serve exceptionally good international cuisine. Jl Campuhan, Ubud, (near Museum Antonio Blanco) ph: 0361 970 095
Award winning Mozaic Restaurant serving a degustation menu at Western prices, but also quality. You need to book at least a few days in advance. It's a treat, but really worth it for anyone who is interested in cuisine. Jl. Raya Sanggingan ph: 0361 975768
There are plenty of other excellent restaurants around Ubud. Just go exploring and you'll find them. We'd love some recommendations ourselves.
You can order home delivery from many restaurants in Ubud. There are some in the back of this folder. Allow between 30- 45 minutes for delivery. For directions tell them: “My name is Andrew, I'm staying in Lodtunduh at Villa Desa Bulan, next to Villa Jineng.”
Cooking or Preparing Your Own Food
We've got a well-equipped kitchen at River Moon, so we welcome you cooking for yourself. Where do you get stuff in Ubud?
Bakery and Deli
Kue on Jalan Raya has very good organic breads and sourdough and also excellent cakes and chocolate. Pizza Bagus in Jalan Pengosekan, has a small, but well stocked deli, that also sells freshly baked baguettes and loaves.
Bali Buddha is a great little health food shop and cafe on Jalan Jembawan 1, Ubud. They also home deliver groceries as well as meals. ph: 0361 976324 / 978963
There is a small well-stocked organic market on Saturday mornings in the forecourt of Pizza Bagus, Jalan Pengosekan. Another operates on Wednesday mornings at forecourt of Cafe Arma (opposite Pizza Bagus). There is a single organic food stall that sells superb ingredients at Warung Sopa each Sunday morning.
There are markets nearby selling local food. Ask the staff where to find them. Both the Ubud and Mas central markets are worth a walkaround just for the sights and smells, but you need to get up early. It's all over by 9am.
Western Style Supermarkets
There are three large supermarkets in Ubud: Coco, Bintang and Delta Dewata. The closest is Coco about 5 minutes by car on the way to Ubud. The others are about a 15 minute drive from River Moon. Bintang carries a larger range of Western produce and their fish and meat is also higher quality. If you have small children, there is also a small 'fun park' upstairs at Bintang where you can safely leave your little ones while you shop. You'll have noticed that Ubud is saturated with convenience stores, where you can buy drinks, snacks etc.

"We love Harvest Moon!!!"
Just stepping through the door of Harvest Moon, led by a most gracious and light-hearted host, was like stepping into instant peace. The cleanliness, elegant decor, lighting and tasteful furnishings created a mood of serenity and style that called our spirits straight home.
As a romantic getaway this tranquil paradise served us deeply. Daily smiling and respectful service from sweet hearted and joyful Balinese beauties often set the mood for a day of sweetness and peace. Views of the magical rice fields and distant happenings were a precious backdrop to days of languishing in the very private feeling lushness of this unique paradise.
Architecturally the space fed our souls by being beautifully spacious and light, allowing the outside in, just enough to feel a part of it, as well as offering the option to close ourselves into a cosy little bubble that shut the world out. We appreciated having the upstairs option for solitude and yoga, should we choose that. This space felt like another heavenly world again from our downstairs sanctuary and we relished in being able to move freely between the two, and to have the greater view offered from this height.
We must mention the outdoor bath. This heavenly feature warrants a review all of it's own! The experience of sharing a luxuriously sized tub, created in taste and style immersed in a fishpond, big enough to share with a fellow bath lover, and serenaded by the soft murmurings of a peaceful Balinese evening was absolutely dream like. The full moon evening on which we shared this treasured experience was simple perfection as we moved from the steamy soaking to a splash in the refreshing pool just a few feet away, and then back again endlessly.
We also loved how enjoying the many options available to us from Ubud's centre was but a small (and fun!) motorcycle ride away. Just far enough to feel we were in a quiet world of our own as well as being convenient and easy enough to access any delights worthy enough to call us out.
Staying at Harvest Moon was a real luxury for us, offering a taste of a world of beauty and peace we will remember forever. Thank-you.

"Royalty at home"
Have you ever found that place when you go on holidays, where you feel like royalty by way of the pristine and elegant architecture and decor and at the same time you feel totally at home? As though the feeling of the crisp white sheets on the bed were always yours and the bed remembers and welcomes the shape of your body like a warm and inviting old friend? Well neither had I until I stayed at Harvest Moon.
Waking up to the silence of the surrounding rice fields, or on other days to the sacred chants from the nearby temple you would never guess that the buzzing centre of Ubud was only a few minutes ride into town.
I must admit it only took a couple of days to get used to leaving my dishes out and creating a lazy trail of belongings in the relaxed knowing that come the next morning the friendly staff will have returned the space to its clean and clear state of sanctuary. What a treat to be tended to in this way and with such a sweet, gentle and non intrusive approach.
Swimming in the pool looking out onto the rice fields and the occasional family of ducks bobbing by was only topped by the outdoor bath and possibly the long lazy hours accidentally spent sitting on the deck watching and listening to the silence, there was at least a couple of days, where I simply didn't leave the house!
As far as value for money goes, Harvest Moon is second to none (and Ive tried a few) and in my opinion if you are going to Ubud, and its available you would be crazy not to stay here. My only hesitation in writing my thoughts is that it will be booked, the next time Im in Ubud and so I considered keeping it a secret, but an experience this good simply must be shared.
Thanks so much for a most memorable, relaxing, deep and nurturing time, can't wait to come back...

"Romantic Get-A-Way at Harvest Moon"
Wow! I can not say enough great things about my stay at Harvest Moon. Everything was perfectly romantic... from the beautiful view of the volcanoes off the back deck, watching the sunset behind the rice fields, to enjoying time in the private pool, relaxing in the balé and lounge chairs, and enjoying the unique architecture and the detailed style of the house itself. A wonderful way to spend time with the one you love over any holiday.
The staff are wonderfully friendly and accommodating. They were all very helpful and willing to assist in any way possible. The land scape is pristinely maintained and adds a luxurious feel to the experience. I would highly recommend staying at Harvest Moon to any couple looking for that perfect get-a-way.
