Lithos traditional house Ontas

House | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 3
Apokoronas is one of the most historic and beautiful areas of Crete, a landscape of wild mountains and fertile valleys. It was the place where emperors and lords of the Byzantine Empire would reside to enjoy the wealth and beauty of the land. In many places the Cretan architectural tradition developed from the 16th century onwards, has been influenced by Venetians.
Lithos, a small traditional house dating from 1800 and open to visitors since 2006 is located in the fine village of Tzitzifes, with close access to roads to the north and the south of Crete. The village has a kafeneion and there are two traditional Cretan restaurants about 700 meters from the house.
Lithos comprises two separate apartments built in local architectural style and offering all modern comforts. The use of natural materials such as wood and stone takes you back to other more simple and romantic times, allowing you to escape from your daily routine.
Both apartments have kitchen, air-conditioning, TV, bathroom and wood-burning stoves for winter. One of them has an old - style oven and a wine press. Outside there is a large vine-covered courtyard and a swimming pool.

"Rustic retreat in pretty village"
This is a very small but attractive studio/appartment in a rural village. Ideal for an 'away from it all' holiday. Ideally one would book both appartments and go with friends or family as th… More

"Perfect, providing the other studio isn't occupied"
We had a lovely stay at Tzitzifes, definitely. The house is tiny but you would live outside most of the time in the summer. The swimmingpool is great to unwind at the end of a hot day.
The fact that it was so good is probably that there was nobody in the adjacent studio for 6 days out of 7, though… not sure it would be as pleasurable if you had to share the outside space all the time - there are two garden tables but the people who arrived on our last day did not realise they had set their dinner on the table that had direct view in our studio, for example… The best setting would probably be if you want to book the two studios with friends, actually.
Also, it would probably be good for the owners to let you know when they will visit: we had the (good) surprise to find all the lien changed after 3 days, when we came back in late afternoon, but they also left us a new note inside the studio the next day when we were away… when I am on a holiday in a rented house as a couple, I surely don't think I should expect visitors at anytime without any notice.
I don't want to finish this on a bad note, because what was not perfect can be remedied very easily. The village is very nice, the villagers welcoming, the cheese produced in the village very good, the tavernas had excellent food, and the studio/outside space is very nicely decorated. I would definitely go back with family/friends.
