The South East England region

Every landscape has a story and the High Weald is no exception.

Its key features - rolling hills, scattered farmsteads, small woodlands, irregular-shaped fields, open heaths and ancient routeways - were created by the end of the 14th century - the High Weald is essentially a medieval landscape.

The High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is situated in south-east England. Covering an area of 1,450 square kilometres (560 sq mi), it extends across the counties of Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex and Kent. It is the fourth largest Area of Outstanding Beauty (AONB) in England and Wales. It is characterised by an attractive, small-scale landscape containing a mosaic of small farms and woodlands, historic parks, sunken lanes and ridge-top villages

The Yew in Lamberhurst churchyard

Could this be the oldest tree in England? According to preservation charity the Kent Men of the Trees, this yew in Lamberhurst could be as much as 6,000 years old, making it a firm contender for the title. The yew is officially registered as an "ancient tree" by the trust as part of the project, which will enable it to be preserved and protected from harm. There is a convenient gate from the garden at Court Lodge into the churchyard.

"Lovely comfortable & peaceful stay"

Good food at a local pub. The owners were very welcoming and a great welcome basket was awaiting our arrival. There was always enough logs for us to light the wood burner each evening.
Lovely walks away from the road.
Another feature was the church which you could see from all angles.

Lovely peaceful cottage - in fact we mentioned how we'd like to pick up the place and plonk it in Brighton...
