Writers, painters, thinkers would love this place. It has the effect of allowing you to just 'be'. Nothing is rushed and everything here is beautiful. You can pretend to be hidden from the rest of the world, but be safe in the knowledge that everything you could want or need is actually very close by.

We are off-grid and generate all electricity via solar panels. Water is collected from rain water and sewage is treated through a wetland system. Hot water is available whenever you need it. You would not realise the house functions any differently to a 'normal' one. We do not have air con as we neither need it nor like it; the house was positioned purposefully to take advantage of cross winds and the direction of the sun. The prevalence of concrete in the build keeps the house both cool and warm, depending which is needed. Minimal direct sun enters the house and overall it remains cool, aided by the ceiling fans in all rooms. Wi-fi is excellent and reliable. Without the benefits of off-grid capabilities we wouldn't be able to live in such a privileged location, which makes where we are even more wonderful.

Should you wish to venture further afield, during your time here in the trees, we are excellently placed to access the Mayan ruins at Coba, a few km up the road, as well as the colonial city of Valladolid only an hour away. We are 16km from Tulum town itself (and its famous ruins) and only 20 mins from the filmic-beauty of the Caribbean white sandy beaches. Cenotes - fresh water pools of varying sizes often in geologically interesting settings, and in which you can swim - are plentiful in this area. They make a change from a day at the beach. The more touristy buzz of Playa del Carmen can be found an hour's drive away.

The local small pueblo, 4 km up the road, has a handful of authentic taco restaurants, one of which we visit almost weekly.

Whilst your rooms are attached to the house, they afford an excellent degree of privacy as they are quite separate in many ways. We chat with guests in the morning mostly, and thereafter leave them to do their own thing. Of course, if you need us for anything, we are here.

Finding us is extremely easy; there are only 3 instructions from Cancun airport to our door, and there is ample parking when you arrive. We live off the Tulum-Coba road, so taxis can be easily hailed, be they shared or private ones. A private taxi costs only $100MN from Tulum. The presence of collectivos is increasing but they are not as prevalent as in town. People hitch, too, and this rarely takes long. Most people arrive by car.

The Riviera Maya region

The Riviera Maya is a vibrant part of the world made all the more enlivening due to the bright sun, great temperatures and beautiful flora. The many international visitors account in no small part for the many different international food and cafe options available everywhere but the smallest of villages. Huge swathes of the region are undeveloped and in Tulum in particular, any development is very low level. Driving around involves effectively straight roads edged by jungle that goes on for miles. There is a simplicity about the place that makes being here easy and stress-free.

We are only about 3 hours away from the Belize border, 2 hours from Cancun, and 1hr from Playa del Carmen, a friendly tourist town where you'll also discover some of the Riviera Maya's best shopping, dining and night-life. That said, you can eat perfectly delicious food, and have much fun in Tulum itself and especially at the many beach restaurants and bars. Tulum is full of coffee shops and other places to eat, as well as being well stocked with shops selling beautiful pottery and hammocks etc.

There are ample opportunities for water sports including diving, kite-surfing, kayaking and snorkelling. The largest coral reef in the northern hemisphere, and second only to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, lies just off the coast. The scores of cenotes in the area afford the chance to snorkel and dive in freshwater caves and subterranean rivers, should you fancy an alternative experience to the sea.

Valadollid, a lovely colonial town that makes a fantastic day out, is only 1 hour north of here, as are the Coba ruins.

Merida ( a larger version of Valladolid) and Chichen Itza also lie to the north of us.
