Lakefront home in mountains...
House | 7 bedrooms | sleeps 12
Located 17 miles from Brevard, NC, Lake Toxaway is the largest private lake in NC. To see more information about this beautiful area go to www.laketoxaway.com This is a second home for us and, along with our family, we enjoy this wonderful retreat as often as we can. The home was designed and built (2003) with simplicity of style to maximize the lake front lot, is decorated throughout with both new and old pieces which we have gathered over the years and includes features which make such a place comfortable and practical. The combination Great Room, Dining and Kitchen are fully equipped, bed linens are furnished along with towels/cloths for bath and lake. Two bedrooms are on the main level with others on the second floor, some with direct lake views. A large open sun deck plus a screened porch with hot tub provide views of the lake and mountains.
Walk a few steps down to the dock where you can enjoy swimming, sun bathing, kayaking (2), fishing (with proper license) and if you like, a private boat can be rented from the marina and kept at the dock during your stay. The lake is all fresh water, fed by numerous mountain streams, and is always refreshing!
Lake Toxaway is located in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and as a private resort, has been a vacation and summer playground for the rich and famous such as Edison, Ford, DuPont, et al in the early 1900s; and in 1916 heavy rains caused the lake dam to fail. Reopened for new development beginning in the 1950s, families have built their private residences and second homes here, and enjoy an impressive array of amenities; many year 'round. Several thousand acres comprise the Lake Toxaway Estates, and only property owners are permitted access to the lake and environs.
When you want to shop, buy groceries, dine out or just browse, the town of Brevard is just 17 miles away; and the town of Cashiers (emphasis on first syllable)is just 13 miles. There are also 2-3 small locally operated cafes, hardware store and small shops very nearby on Hwy 64. The town of Highlands, about 40 minutes away, attracts people from all walks during the high summer season. There you will find antique shops and auctions, boutique shops, restaurants, furniture and more! There are secret hideaway homes here for celebrities, along with country club golf courses and resorts. A public tennis court is provided for people in the Toxaway community (including our guests) just 5 minutes from the home. Since we do not belong to the Lake Toxaway Country Club we cannot offer golf there; however there are multiple golf courses within 1-2 hours away which are open to public use. World famous Biltmore House in Asheville is a "must see"! Have you played on a "mountain" course yet? And when you are ready for more strenuous exercise, there are hundreds of miles of mountain trails (improved and primitive) in the area where you can walk, run or ride bikes (which can be rented in Brevard). There are several national forests and park lands in this region including The Great Smoky Mountains, Pisgah National Forest, Nantahala National Forest, Cherokee Indian reservation and state parks where boundless trails and fishing streams await your exploration!
