The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The Languedoc-Roussillon region is one of the sunniest locations in France. It is famous for its excellent wines notably, the red Fitou wine. There are many places of historical interest scattered around the region; fortified towns, cliff-top fortresses, and coastal castles.
The Medieval town of Carcassonne , a World heritage site,is within easy reach of the apartment and is in superb condition. You can wander around the lanes of the town or along the striking ramparts overlooking the surrounding countryside. There are daily tours available too if you wish to be better informed.
The castle of the Cathars,( a religious group persecuted for their beliefs) crown mountain peaks of the Corbieres encouraging many a tourist to climb up to the high-top fortifications. The building and engineering of these castles are fascinating and the views on a clear sunny day, are breathtaking. There are often medieval festivals in summer where children can experience what life must have been like for the locals, watch falconry displays and knights practicing their sword fighting to name but a few attractions.
The town of Perpignan is within easy reach and is a lively place both during the day and evening. Great restaurants, live music and street events are some of the things on offer. There are also plenty of places with historical interest too. Something for everyone - even for the teenagers ,as the shops are familiar! The larger supermarkets are dotted around the town should you wish to purchase larger quantities of groceries.
The beach is within an hour's drive of the apartment, depending on which part of the coast you head for. Bacares, Leucate plage, Canet plage and Argeles-sur-Mer are all within an hour's drive. There are several Aqua Lands - themed water parks along the coast which supply all the thrills of flumes and water features.Further up the coast, is the African animal reserve of Sijean - a safari adventure which appeals to children and adults alike.
The town of Collioure, just south of Perpignan is a fascinating place. Local artists can be seen painting along the harbour walls; street cafes and restaurants abound; famous for anchovies - a local delicacy; history ranging from the Domincan monks to the Knights Templar - well worth a visit after a day at the beach.
If you wish to explore the area without having to drive, then you may be interested in Le Petit Train Jaune which travels from Villefranche Vernet les Bains through to Latour de Caro. You'll be skirting the sides of the Tet valley, winding through forests and trundling over spectacular viaducts. One of the viaducts, Pont Gisclard, is the only railway suspension bridge still in use.
Spain is only just over an hour away so, day trips over the border are easy. For a longer day trip - early start, late night, the fabulous city of Barcelona is an option. Visit the Gaudi park and cathedral, Neu Camp for the football supporters amongst you, and paella in the harbour for you foodies.
The village of Paziols depends entirely on the vineyards for its livelihood. This rural, farming community is the ideal location to learn more about the secrets of the wines and the vineyards of this area. Trips out to the local cave cooperatives to sample the wines is a must. The village is surrounded by vineyards, rocky outcrops and dominated by the impressive Mont Tauch. The valley floor is covered with vines which in the summer are lush and green whilst in the winter and spring show the gnarled and twisted trunks of the vines creating a completely different aspect
The village is small but friendly and will supply all the essentials for a self catering holiday. For the best bakery, go to the BarTabac which sells excellent bread, croissants and pastries as well as coffee and alcoholic beverages. For fresh meat, vegetables, fruit, cheeses and frozen products, visit the village grocery . Each week there are visits from mobile traders who sell produce ranging from fruit, vegetables, cheese, and fish to household commodities and clothes. The local town hall ( Mairie) will announce these visits over the village tannoy system - a real live 'Allo, allo!' There is also a small restaurant
In the summer there are a number of village events ranging from the summer fete which is a weekend of music, dancing and entertainment, to second-hand table-top/car boot sales where you can pick up a bargain. In October, the village celebrates the grape harvest with dancing, music and entertainment.
The small church at the top of the village boasts great views over the valley and beyond. It has recently been restored and holds concerts and services there regularly during the summer months.
Just outside the village are the remains of a Roman bridge which is easily accessible by foot through the vines. To the north of the village, as you drive towards Tuchan, there is a natural water source called La Fontaine. Here, you may picnic in the shade and paddle in the river. The river is accessible at various places and is suitable for swimmers and non-swimmers.
On the road out of Paziols, there is a camping site ( LaPierre) where the owner is happy to allow people to use the swimming pool and other facilities. ( High season only)
Tuchan, the next major village, is larger and has more amenities ie; pharmacy, butchers, medical centre, bank, petrol station and Tourist Information. The Mont Tauch wine cave and education centre is a great place to visit if you want to appreciate the local wines. The Chateau d'Aguilar is situated just outside Tuchan and is well worth a visit. Children love climbing over the rocks and stones, imagining themselves as a character from their favourite stories. The views back across the valley are stunning as on a clear day you can see the mountains of the Ariege. The village of Paziols can be seen clearly nestled in the crook of the hillside.
Mont Tauch,900m, is accessible by car, bike or foot. The views are stunning as you can see across the mountain ranges in one direction, spotting the amazing castles and forts built along the high cliffs of the mountains by the Cathars dating from the 11th century; to the other direction, where you can see the Mediterranean coastline.

"A real escape and a chance to re-group as a family."
As a family we needed to escape the busyness of our hectic lives and this apartment helped us do that, We slowed down and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life;cycling, swimming and wandering down to the village for the morning bread. The apartment is in an old building, typically french with its own private entrance which helps keep it separate from the house above.. It was cool during the day and we enjoyed eating out on the terrace together as a family in the evenings. The village is not touristy but there is enough for teenagers to do. We have been here twice now and each time returned home refreshed. A real escape and chance to re-group.
