S234 - Regatta Cottage
Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Let by Helpful Holidays: In Feock, on the shores of tidal Restronguet Creek on Point Quay, is Regatta Cottage, part of an historic Grade II listed building, with wonderful views of the creek and woodland on the opposite shore. In a tranquil position, it has enclosed gardens front and back and waterside lawn for daydreaming, breakfast or launching small boats.
Little path from drive to front door leading into the kitchen; hall with good view and door to little enclosed garden (good for creek-watching and bird sounds on summer evenings); living/dining room with woodburner, lovely pictures, TV/DVD and dining table in the window for views; fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, microwave, freezer) with breakfast table; two twin bedrooms downstairs; bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). Upstairs, master double bedroom with creek views, and bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). Boats can be hired and delivered. Pub, 1 mile. Wonderfully peaceful base for bird or creek-watching or just messing about on the water.

The West Country region
Cornwall's 'Med': here is Cornwall at its warmest, most sheltered; of creeks and tidal waters penetrating deep inland, deep in woods, silent except for birdsong; of wonderful gardens growing things that live nowhere else outdoors in England (marvellous in rhododendron, camellia, magnolia time, from March to end of May especially); of sailing boats everywhere decorating the sea; of harbour villages where the light is Mediterranean - dazzling in the sunshine. And really very little that is ugly has been allowed to be built.
Here is Truro, Cornwall's (small) capital, with its 20th century cathedral; Falmouth, resort town and cargo/cruise ship/yacht port, superbly sited; and the glorious Helford River. Trewithen, Trelissick, Glendurgan, Trebah, Heligan (Lost Gardens of) and Caerhays are among the finest gardens. In the very middle of Cornwall, Lanhydrock house is very special, so is its garden. Not the greatest area for beaches, but good sandy ones near Veryan and Portscatho, in St Mawes, and around Falmouth and the Helford River's mouth. Not to be missed is St Just-in-Roseland's churchyard; nor - within easy reach - is The Eden Project (see South Cornwall).
Feock: sprawling village (church) almost hidden in trees, eyeing lazily an extensive estuary with creeks and open sea beyond. Boats/yachts on sheltered water, shingle beach for launching dinghies; sailing/windsurfing/canoeing lessons; beach café. Golf nearby. Trelissick Gardens (Nat. Trust) and the King Harry Ferry to the Roseland Peninsula. Creek-side walks. Truro (cathedral city), 5 miles. Falmouth, 7.
