Finca Acehuche
£300–£500 / week
About the home
The house is set in a walled three acre olive grove with shaded areas of cork and holm oak. The finca was chosen for its particularly fine views of the Sierra de Montanchez with its Moorish castle and Catholic abbey. Surrounded by unspoilt scenery and wildlife, there is excellent walking and mountain bike riding from the front door along paths and caminos. It is perfect for bird watchers with vultures, eagles, bee eaters and golden orioles. Or simply relax in the sun or on the large covered terrace with a sofa and hammocks.
The small hilltop town of MONTANCHEZ is approx 10 minute drive. Well known for its specialist shops selling jamon. It has general shops, banks, restaurants, cafes and bars, and a weekly Saturday market.
SWIMMING: we have chosen not to create a pool at Finca Acehuche. We swim in the excellent large public swimming pools in MONTANCHEZ (approx 10 min drive) or in ALCUESCAR (approx 5 min drive) both with toddlers pool and a shaded bar for drinks and snacks, open June-September. Or we go to a large swimming lake EMBALSE DE PROSEPINA, with outside bars, on the way to Merida (approx 25 min drive).
Finca Acehuche is at the centre of a cultural triangle of historical towns, each about a 30 minute drive:
TRUJILLO with the beautiful Plaza de Mayor, cobbled streets, noble mansions, churches and hilltop castle.
MERIDA considered to contain the finest Roman remains in Spain and the National Museum of Roman Art.
CACERES old town in a World Heritage site with well preserved stone mansions and palaces within ancient Moorish walls.

Further details indoors:
The house is reached by a 1km rural track (camino) which should be driven slowly as it is narrow and rough in places.
Inside there is an attractive living/dining area with a well equipped kitchen area. A log burning stove heats the house during cooler months. French doors lead on to the large covered terrace. There are two bedrooms, one with double bed and the other with a double and single bed.
The house has been sympathetically built and furnished. Traditional locally made chestnut french doors and windows with internal shutters and tiled floors create a simple and stylish interior.
Solar panels provide electricity powering an A++ energy efficient fridge, lighting, washing machine* etc. The walls and roof are well insulated, the house is designed to keep cool and shaded in the summer and capture passive solar heat and remain warm in the winter.
It has a large covered terrace, with views of the Sierra de Montánchez to the front. There is a table and chairs for eating, as well as a sofa and hammocks for relaxing.
*washing machine (cold wash only) can only be used when the solar power permits. When it is not possible we have arranged one machine wash with a neighbour, at our cost.
The Extremadura region

Extremadura is one of the least visited areas of traditional Spain. Large expanses of unspoilt landscape, with olive and figs groves, vineyards and the dehesa for animals. Small traditional villages and towns.
An important area for birdwatching with the Monfrague and Conrnalvo nature parks. There are also local reservoirs which are important for birds and wildlife.
It is green with wonderful flowers until late June, when the heat dries everything to ochre. Sunny, hot summers with cool and wet winters.
Sierra de Montanchez is a most beautiful and culturally interesting area of Extremadura.
The Trujillo / Montanchez area
At the centre of the three most interesting historic towns of Extremadura (each approx 30 minute drive).
CACERES - the old town is a World Heritage Site with well preserved stone mansions and palaces within ancient Moorish walls. It hosts the WOMAD music festival each May.
MERIDA - founded in 25BC as the capital of teh Roman province of Lusitania, it is considered to contain the finest Roman remains in Spain. It has a Roman amphitheatre and temples as well as the National Museum of Roman Art.
Easter: Semana Santa easter processions through the town.
June-August: Merida Festival of Classical Theatre, performances of music, dance and theatre are held in the Roman theatre.
TRUJILLO: birthplace of conquistadors Francisco de Pizarro and Francisco de Orellana, and built with the spoils of South American gold, it has a beautiful Plaza Mayor, cobbled streets, noble mansions, churches and hilltop castle.
MONTANCHEZ (approx 10 min drive) is famed for its jamon (cured pork). It is an unspoilt traditional town. Each August it holds a festival that celebrates the religions of Islam, Judaism and Christianity with performances of music and dance in the castle.

Guestbook for Finca Acehuche
"We had a wonderful, peaceful and relaxing holiday. Finca Acehuche has an elegant simplicity and is well situated within an inspiring landscape. The geology feels ancient, with fascinating trackways and charming olive groves to explore. We were particularly impressed with the finca's 'off grid' systems which add to the 'getting away from it all' holiday experience and give a taste of self sufficiency.
Nearby Montanchez is an authentic and atmospheric town and Caceres a culturally vibrant, historic city. We would wholeheartedly recommend Finca Acehuche to anyone looking for an interesting and relaxing holiday in this beautiful and unspoilt part of Spain." T Parker
