What to do in Wiltshire
LACOCK: Lacock village is the pride of Wiltshire and completely under the care of National Trust. The village and abbey date back to the 13th century and remain largely untouched. Your group can still marvel at the lime washed, half timber and stone buildings that make up Lacock. There is plenty for your group to see and do in Lacock.
Your group can shop at the many local craft and gift shops or stop to eat at the pub or tea rooms. Lacock bbey is the perfect place to take your children as the abbey was featured in two of the Harry Potter films. Don't forget the obligatory photo of the famous White Horse on the side of the hill.

DIRECTIONS: M4 Junction 17, reset car trip meter. A350 to Chippenham (stay on A350 until you reach Long’s Park Castle). At exactly 16 miles (about 20 mins or so) you pass the sign for West Ashton, then a lay-by on the right and Long’s Park Castle is visible through the woods on the left. Don’t turn off into the village of West Ashton! The driveway is actually off the A350.
Train: Trowbridge Station or Westbury Station for mainline London/Penzance trains, and then take a Taxi for an 8-minute journey.

Fabulous Place full of charm and novelty. Had my 50th here with close friends and family. We actually stayed in the whole weekend and didn't even venture out! It was just what the doctor ordered, peace and quiet in the middle of nowhere surrounded by loving people and plenty of stories. The Castle itself I couldn't fault really, clean and well maintained. It wasn't as big as I thought but that just made it cosier. |

After renting this place sight unseen from the web we were very disappointed with several aspects of this property. First, it's right on the A350 with plenty of traffic noise. The website suggests total privacy- nearest neighbour 1 mile; this certainly paints the picture of serenity but clearly this is not the case. The website suggests plenty of reception rooms but the reality is small, poky rooms except for the conservatory which is cheaply built with a plastic roof. The bedrooms are tiny and the entire building only has two WCs. Very disturbingly the building was completely flyblown. We rang the managers who seemed to blame the farmer but strangely there were no flies outside. The flies were uncontrollable but particularly in the kitchen area. We bought cans of spray, fly tape, 3 zappers and some citronella devices as well as fly swats. Flies were all over the food all the time despite this, and two adults and three children had gastro during our stay. The water was undrinkable, drains were blocked.... it just seemed sanitation was an issue here. The managers told us no standards applied as this was considered a private rental. As a result we have been forced to report the property to the environmental health officer at Wiltshire council. The clock room is a converted shed, very damp smelling and frankly embarrassing for us to put up our guests in. Don't expect a "summer house overlooking the lake", rather a rickety shed next to a small reedy pond metres from the A350. In general the place is very neglected and dilapidated, and needs a thorough going over. The other thing that got on our nerves was the absolute plethora of signs telling you what you can't do, ruling out candles, open fires, etc etc but even extending to telling you not to adjust the shower head.... really. Many rooms have unnecessary sensor lights- the cook had to wave her arms around in the kitchen to get some light if she wasn't moving enough. The good points: a great garden and outdoor area. Response: This was a malicious review. No guest stayed here with a complaint of this nature. The Fire Service visted us and found nothing abnormal also did the Environmental Agency and Trading Standards. We can only presume this to be a competitor as the 'supposed reviewer' never even spoke to us |
