The Southern Italy / Calabria region

The Calabria region is set apart by breathtaking scenery, beautiful beaches and imposing mountain ranges. Exploring the peninsula gives superb drives through an extraordinary diversity of stunning landscapes / seascapes. This is the real Italy of your dreams.
Calabria enjoys warm sunshine most of the year with summer temperatures often in the 30C+ range while spring and autumn are delightfully pleasant, ideal for an early or late break when further north may be too unsettled. This idyllic climate, with its warm temperatures and extended summer season means Tropea is a wonderful Italian holiday haven all year round. We believe Tropea beats any of the other Mediterranean or Adriatic resorts.
The Tropea / Parghelia area
Tropea has recently been getting increasing attention and it does not take long to see why. It is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque towns in the South of Italy, with awesome scenery, fabulous golden sandy beaches, marina, cobbled streets and historic churches. Scuba diving, fishing and Pedalo hire are all available, while L'Isola Church is worth the climb for a visit.
The unspoilt historic town centre breathes life and character, with a wide selection of restaurants, bars and cafes making it the perfect location to just kick back and revel in the Southern Italian way of life – we have many great local eating recommendations from both us and happy clients. Local events include an excellent Blues festival in mid-September when the town resounds to great music and a wonderful street life atmosphere.
Not only is the area within easy distance of the motorway system and Calabria’s international airports, there are also unforgettable coastal or country drives to little villages or national parks. The train service can also be used for this, while in summer ferries offer visits to the Aeolian Islands, Stromboli and Sicily.

I stayed at Oliver and Gillians apartment with my husband and two daughters (aged 12 and 7yrs) at the end of Aug/early Sept 2011 for one week. This is a super apartment and its better than what you see in the photos...I was so pleased when I arrived! Oliver and Gillian are good, honest people and we felt we could trust them every step of the booking process. Oliver is professional and he answered all my questions, sent us a proper contract/agreement and organised my airport transfer and a food welcome pack. We had a stress free, wonderful family holiday and absolutely loved the Marasusa complex...plus we felt we got really good value for our money. A big thank you! Apartment: The view from the patio/terrace was absolutely breathtaking...both day and night!! Seeing the volcano clearly on the horizon is amazing and when the sun starts to set...wow! Be aware that this terrace is shared with about 4 other apartments, although it is very large and spacious so you dont feel overlooked and there is a private area directly outside the apartment doors. The apartment itself was spacious, modern and well laid out with nice furniture and upon arrival it was clean - I am very houseproud so this was an important point for me. There was plenty of clean and pressed spare bed linen and towels in the cupboards, the mattresses were new and clean but they are very firm - however we just popped one of the spare duvets under the sheet and it made it much softer. We really liked the bidet and the double sinks in the bathroom. There are air con units in every room, they work very well and are relatively quiet if you want them on at night. The kitchen had all the pots, pans, plates and utensils we needed. We loved the unit in the lounge full of beach stuff, dvds, books, paper and pens and loads of guides to local area - really thoughtful. Pool, gardens and surroundings: The views from all directions were fab and the gardens were immaculately kept. The entire complex is secure, secluded and very peaceful..so no screaming children or manic kids clubs which was lovely. A lot of people there were apartment owners and everyone was very respectful and polite. The pool area was wonderful and our young daughters loved it - infact we had a job persuading them to go anywhere except to the pool! It is kept beautifully clean and the pool is quite large. There did used to be a pool bar selling drinks and ice creams but this had sadly closed down when we were there. There is a laundry area on site with two washing machines and a dryer, its 5 euros per wash but I got loads of clothes in and its really useful to have. The private road up to the apartment is winding and steep and its so lovely and rural...the views are spectacular...its a great walk if you're up for working all the ice creams and pizza off! The local horses at the bottom of the hill are very partial to a polo mint or a few carrots too if you're passing their stable pens! One even had a little foal when we were there. Tropea is literally minutes away by car and the old town is stunning...so 'Italian' and traditional with a good selection of shops and lovely restaurants catering to all budgets. We went to Tropea beach, Parghelia beach and Capo Vaticano beach and they were all lovely. The local beach at Parghelia was great for kids, a secluded little bay, no strong waves and shallow water. There were no amenities (i.e. toilets etc) and lots of steps down, but the white sands and turquiose water there were simply fantastic. You definitely need a car to get about if you want to get up and down to the local village (Parghelia) easily without the steep walk. And if you want to go further than Parghelia and dont want to pay for taxis. There is a small grocery store, bakery etc in Parghelia and a couple of nice cafes and a pizzeria called Antonios which does great takeaway pizzas. The main road through the region is not suitable for walking along and the local roads out of the villages and towns dont really have pedestrian paths so I would personally not recommend trying to walk to Tropea even though it doesnt look far on the map. All in all we loved the 'real Italian' feel of Calabria, and we loved the Marasusa apartments and I could have moved in permanently...I nearly cried when we had to go home! We will be coming back! |
