The Southern Italy / Calabria region
Calabria is the southern most region of Italy, the ankle and toe of the Italian "boot" – a rugged peninsula where grapevines, fig and olive trees grow on the mountainsides, and where there are beaches all along the intricate coastline, which faces east, south and west all at once.
When you come to Calabria, you will be captivated by its scenery - whether you go up in the mountains, or travel along the winding coastal highways, to Calabria's seaside towns and beaches, where you will have the opportunity to savour the hearty, tasty, Calabrese cuisine, all made from local produce, meats, fish and fruit.
The area is renowned for its white sandy beaches, hot summers and temperate winters. There are two National Parks within reach and the villa is in an ideal location as a base to travel within Calabria, to the Aeolean Islands with Sicily just over an hour and a half away.
Tropea / Zambrone area
The local area is mainly served by the town of Zambrone, which has a variety of shops where all of your daily requirements can be met, whether it be fresh produce or cash from the ATM. Along the coast there are many towns and villages all with their own range and variety of shops, serving local delicacies such as the spicy salami known as nduja.
As you would expect there are many, bars, restaurants and gelaterias all offering tremendous value as your euro goes a lot further here than the rest of Italy.
10 minutes south is Tropea, the main town of the area is built on the top of a cliff and from many of the vantage points you can look out to Stromboli. There are several beaches and a port from where you can take a trip around the Aeolean islands. Take time and study the narrow cobbled lined streets, sit out on the pavement of one of the many bars and watch as the locals take their evening passaggiata. You may be able to listen to one of the many outside concerts held in the squares.
Should you wish to combine a beach and sailing holiday then Sunsail start their operation in the port of Tropea from summer 2008.
Inland the interior of Calabria is dominated by the Sila and the Aspromonte National Parks. Here you can see lakes and luscious forests in which there are wolves, golden eagles, eagle owls and the rare Bonelli’s eagle. Take a visit and experience small villages with the local women still dressed in their black traditional clothes. Visit the area around San Giovanni in the winter and you could find full skiing facilities.
