Southern Italy region

Calabria is the southern most region of Italy, the ankle and toe of the Italian "boot" – a rugged peninsula where grapevines, fig and olive trees grow on the mountainsides, and where there are beaches all along the intricate coastline, which faces east, south and west all at once.

Calabria is in the process of being "discovered" by the English speaking world as more and more people from the UK and North America learn about this astonishingly beautiful part of the world.

For millenia, the people here have made pottery, spun wool, knitted plain garments. They've milked their goats, made bread, rolled pasta, fermented wine and distilled limoncello, a sweet lemon aperitif. They have gone about their business, shop-keeping, worshipping in their numerous churches and duomos, and observing holy days and feast days around the year with pious gusto.

When you come to Calabria, you will be dumbfounded by its scenery - whether you go up in the mountains, or travel along the winding coastal highways, to Calabria's seaside towns and beaches.

And once you've arrived, and settled in, you will have the opportunity to savour the hearty, tasty, Calabrese cuisine, all made from local produce, meats, fish and fruit.

The Calabrese are not quite ready for masses of English-speaking tourists, but visit Calabria now - before the crowds arrive. You will get by with very few problems if you are patient and respectful, and all your needs will be met and you will have the holiday of your life!

Beaches

The nearest beach is Zambrone Marina, which is only two minutes away by car. Here you will find plenty of free parking. Beyond the promenade the long white sandy beach leads down to the blue-green ocean with rocky coves and picturesque cliffs. The beaches in this area are remarkable in that plenty of space is always available even in the peak season.

Boats, pedalos and jet skis are available for hire in the summer season. There are a number of bars and restaurants

There is a multitude of public and private beaches, all with public access and most with a family run restaurant or two where a leisurely lunch can be taken together with the locals

Tropea

10 minutes south is Tropea, the main town of the area is built on the top of a cliff and from many of the vantage points you can look out to Stromboli. There are several beaches and a port from where you can take a trip around the Aeolean islands. Take time and study the narrow cobbled lined streets, sit out on the pavement of one of the many bars and watch as the locals take their evening passaggiata. You may be able to listen to one of the many outside concerts held in the squares.

Capo Vaticano

10 minutes further on is the area known as Capo Vaticano, where you can discover the many quality beaches, restaurants and views out to sea. This is an area designated as an ecological sanctuary for numerous birds and marine life.
