The Dalmatia region

Diocletian's Palace

At the end of the third century AD, the Roman Emperor Diocletian built his palace on the bay of Aspalathos. Here, after abdicating on the first of May in A.D. 305, he spent the last years of his life. The bay is located on the south side of a short peninsula running out from the Dalmatian coast into the Adriatic, four miles from the site of Salona, the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia.

This palace is today the heart of the inner-city of Split where all the most important historical buildings can be found. The importance of Diocletian's Palace far transcends local significance because of its level of preservation and the buildings of succeeding historical periods, stretching from Roman times onwards, which form the very tissue of old Split. The Palace is one of the most famous and integral architectural and cultural constructs on the Croatian Adriatic coast and holds an outstanding place in the Mediterranean, European and world heritage.

In November 1979 UNESCO, in line with the international convention concerning the cultural and natural heritage, adopted a proposal that the historic Split inner city, built around the Palace, should be included in the register of the World Cultural Heritage.

Excursions

A number of one-day trips are available from Trogir:-

SPLIT - A town of classical Roman, old Croatian, Romanesque and renaissance architecture, with a Mediterranean atmosphere. It is well-known for sports and shipbuilding. Half-day or all-day excursions by boat or bus.

MAKARSKA, the centre of the riviera and coastal area, is a natural choice, with its town square, Cathedral of St. Mark, but above all because of the Franciscan Monastery and its rich collections.

THE ISLAND OF HVAR The town of Hvar, the biggest settlement on the island, abounds in Romanesque and Renaissance buildings, and Mediterranean atmosphere. It bears the name of Croatian Madeira. The town of Jelsa, the second biggest on the island, is famous for its vintage Dalmatian wines. All day excursions.

IMOTSKI - A Mediaeval Town located in the hinterland of Mt. Biokovo, near a rich karst field (Imotsko polje) with well kept vineyards. Famous for its blue and red lakes. It offers a completely different atmosphere from that of the coast.

DUBROVNIK - A Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque town - all in one, is a must. Located on the very southern end of Croatia.All-day excursions.

OMIS - A coastal, mediaeval town located in a picturesque canyon of the Cetina river. Five kilometres up to the Cetina canyon, there is "Radmanove Mlinice", an excursion place for famous for bread baked under coals and for fresh trout.

MEDJUGORJE - A world famous sanctuary.

Detailed information on excursions can be obtained at the tourist agencies.

Trogir / Ciovo area

Trogir is a small island connecting the island of Ciovo and the mainland by bridges. The town is a UNESCO heritage centre, and the majority of the buildings are from the medieval period. The town is built about a maze of narrow alley ways, and is full of small intimate restaurants, bars and ice-cream parlours. Along the waterfront are the livelier bars and restaurants, where you can sit and watch the mega-rich pull up and moor their boats, and dream 'perhaps one day................'.

CIOVO, is an island 15.3 km long and 3.5 km wide; population 6,071; highest peak Rudine (218 m). In the east, Ciovo is about 2 km away from the mainland (Cape Marjan); in the north-west it is connected with the mainland by a bascule bridge (in Trogir). The island of Ciovo actually encloses the Kastela Gulf.

The southern side of the island is exposed to the sirocco, however it is protected from the bora, in contrast to the northern coast (protected from the sirocco but exposed to the bora). There are no surface water streams. There are also several caves, the most prominent being Bilosaj and Anicina Jama (Annie's Pit).

The vegetation is typically Mediterranean, consisting chiefly in underbrush (holm oak, myrtle, wormwood, juniper etc.), especially between Okrug Gornji and Okrug Donji. On the northern side of the island are forests of pine and cypress (particularly on the way from Trogir to Arbanija). Major crops include olives, figs, almonds, vines and citrus fruit. Apart from a part of the town of Trogir, there are several villages: Arbanija, Zedno, Okrug Gornji, Okrug Donji, and the hamlets of Slatine and Prizidnica. On the western part of the island are sand and pebble beaches, the largest being those in the Saldun bay. Smaller coves include Duga, Tatinja and Movarstica. Along the south-western coast are several smaller islands (Sveta Fumija, Kraljevac, Galerija, etc.); their cliffs provide good opportunities for underwater fishing. On the eastern side of the island are smaller beaches, around Slatine and the Supetar Cove.
