The North East Italy / Veneto region
Venice & Verona, 2 of Italy's jewels, and great natural diversity & beauty comprising Lake Garda, hills, snow mountains(Dolomites), rivers, beaches. Fine thermal spring resorts. Excellent skiing and trekking, bicycling, fishing, golf, hang-gliding and other extreme sports. For the thirsty, the finest bubbly in Italy (highly affordable!), the dry velvety red from Valpolicella , & other fine wines from Breganze.
For art, Venice & Verona spoil us. Near Venice, the glass-making in Murano is world famous. Verona was Romeo and Juliet's home; the famous balcony beckons...and the open air opera is rather special. Masterpieces of Veneto art are to be found also in Padova, Vicenza & Belluno. The coast is dotted with hundreds of beautiful villas surrounded by magnificent grounds, ancient homes of aristocrats.
The Dolomites watch over meadows, woods, forests, and lakes with a rich endowment of flora and fauna protected in parks. Just a few miles from Venice, the foothills harbour charming towns and picturesque vineyards. The Bellunesi National park encompasses environments of exceptional variety. The Vette (peaks) di Feltre & Mount Serva have been famous since the 18th century for flora. The park area was free from ice during the Quaternary glaciation, which accounts for the diversity of environments and presence of rare species.
Treviso / Commune di Vas area
Other than Venice & Verona: The fortress town of Belluno overlooking the river Piave is striking; scale its steepest side in the amazing escalator, disembark in the historic centre. Find important Venetian art, a generous curving piazza, superb beverages in wonderful bars/cafes, splendid views, concerts. Go to Valdobbiadene, the attractive small town, with an enormous tower set against the blue-green hills; THE town to buy Cartitse (thechampagne of Italy) and Prosecco. From here take the winding road to Vittorio Veneto via Folina, drinking in the beautiful vineyards carpetting the hillsides. Stop in a pizzeria with commanding views, or tuck in at one of the excellent trattorias and ristorantes along the way. Vittorio Veneto is a town to see. It stands at the site of a famous victory, the wresting of a part of Italy from Austrian rule. One of the nicest things about Italy is its Festas; celebrations with a theme. There'll be at least one within striking distance whenever you're there. Caorera is the proud host of the Festa de Zucca (pumpkin) in the first week of October...4,000 visitors come in to sample fine traditional food, folk band and singing, and traditional crafts. The piece de resistance is the amazing array of pumpkins, every shape and size and hue! For lashings of natural beauty head for Cortina, or Lake Garda. Skiers, you're spoilt for choice!
