About this location
The Lake Como region
"One arm of Lake Como turns off to the south between two unbroken chains of mountains, which cut it up in a series of bays and inlets as the hills advance into the water and retreat again, untill it suddenly grows much narrower and takes the appearance and the motion of a river between a headland on one side and a wide stretch of shore on the other...."
(Alessandro Manzoni, The Betrothed).
Mentioned in Manzoni's famous verses that describe the scenery where his story is set, Lake como is one of the most delightful places in Italy (and probably in the world). Also known as Lake Lario, Lake Como is situatde in Lonbardy, between Padana plain and the Alps; of glacial origin, it is the third largest lake in Italy after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. It covers ana rea of 146 square kilometres. It is one of the deepest lake in the Europe and reaches a depth of 426 metres near Argegno. It is shaped like an upside-down "Y" and the lower arms are known as Como (the one to the west) and Lecco (the one to the east) whereas the long northern part is known as Colico.
The Como branch is divided into three basins: the first is bordered by the city of Como, Moltrasio and Torno; the second ends between Laglio and Nesso and the third ends at Bellagio on Punta Blabianello.
Here You can see the famous Villa Blabianello, owned by FAI (Italian Foundation for the Environment). The lake's principal distributary is the River Adda, that descends from the Valtellina at Colico and then exits at the Lecco branch. Other rivers, that end at Lake Como are the Mera, the Varrone, the Pioverna, the Fiumelatte (the shortest river in Italy), the Liro, the Telo and the Breggia. Due to its Mediterranean climate, it boasts luxuriant lakeside vegetation with flowers like azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias and plants like olive trees and palms.
The only island on the lake is Isola Comacina, which is situated opposite a bay where a very good quality, though in limited quantity, of oil is produced. This area is called "Zoca de l'Oli"in local dialect.
On the east side of the lake, in the Colico branch, there is a small bay, which is so deep-set that it looks like a basin, called the Laghetto di Piona with the Cistercian Abbey of Piona rising from its promontory.
Tremezzo is undoubtedly one of the Lake's most well-known resorts with its splendid view of Bellagio and the Grigne. It is an area full of majestic villas and luxurious hotels dated back to the 18th and 19th centuries. At Rogaro You can admire the ruins of a medieval tower. Splendid villas line the lake side, including the most famous, Villa Carlotta.
"Villa La Quiete" is located in Bolvedro and was built in the 18th century by the Dukes of Carretto. One of the famous guests, who stayed at the villa was Giuseppe Parini.
The church of Santa Maria is also worth a visit: inside the church stands the statue of Black Madonna, which was brought here in 1917 from the basilica of Einsiedeln by a Swiss family.
Villa Carlotta is a place of rare beauty and a sequence of perfectly blended masterpieces of Nature and Man. Built in 1600 by Marquis Giorgio Clerici, the villa has a beautiful Italian Garden full of statues and fountains. Under its next owner, Gianbattista Sommariva, a businessman and Napoleonic period art collector, the villa reached the top of its splendor with works of Canova, Thorvaldsen and Hayez. In the 19th century, the villa passed on to the beautiful Charlotte of Nassau when she married George II, Grand Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, a passionate botanist who made the garden even more beautiful by planting exotic plants and flowers, that made of the place a lovely corner of paradise.
