Villa Vecchia Poncetta
Apartment | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 4
The interior of the apartment was designed by the Arch. Alessandro Dubini and is a combination of both old and contemporary styles using sympathetic design and building techniques.
Many of the materials are reclaimed from the restoration including stunning stone staircases and iron work. Much of the original woodwork has been revealed to expose the hand painted reliefs and detail. Even the tiles in the bathroom are decorated with gold leaf.
Upon entering the Villa through its imposing and original wooden doors, the apartment is situated at the top of a short flight of stone steps. The apartment sits facing the lake with its own side terrace and at the front overlooking the lake is a small vantage point with table and chairs for two.
Through the main door you are immediately aware of the Villa's history and heritage. The hallway mixes new and old and the gorgeous stone cotto floors and whitewashed walls set the tone for the interior of Villa Vecchia Ponchetta. A blend of modernity, character and classic elegance.
From the external entrance to the apartment there is a stone staircase that leads to the rear gardens and swimming pool. They are not suitable for guests with mobility problems and children should be supervised.
Once at the top of the garden there is a large, very private swimming pool with a wood decked terrace. From the pool and terrace there are stunning views across the lake and to the mountains behind.
Tremezzo itself is a lovely town, with a nice selection of cafés and restaurants and also a recently renovated town park. It is also so easy to visit neighbouring towns due to the bus and ferry service.

From the hallway you can access the living space, bathroom and bedroom.
Through a frosted glass door you enter the bathroom which is full of character. The unconventional space has a free standing bath with overhead shower. There is a WC, bidet, and sink. The mosaic tiles in the bathroom even contain gold leaf.
Again from the hallway towards the front of the villa, you enter the living space which has two large lake facing windows with views across Lake Como to Bellagio. The living space has wooden floors, whitewashed walls and ceiling beams revealed in the restoration, complete with hand painted reliefs. There is seating for four people, a dining table and a gorgeous white leather sofa that converts into a sofa bed that can sleep one/two adults or two children.
The day furniture compliments the room and gives it a classic, elegant feel. Also in the living space there is a kitchenette with a washing machine, small hob, microwave oven and storage. Whilst the kitchenette is small it is a well designed facility that will be sufficient for preparing dinner on those odd nights in.
The bedroom is well proportioned, with an iron bed frame and classic furnishing. The large English wardrobe and mirrored bedroom furniture work superbly with the Old Italian architecture.
A wifi internet connection is available from a café approx 50 metres away.
The Lombardy region
Lake Como is situated within the Lombardy region which is also home to Milan, the fashion capital of the world; Bergamo with its majestic squares and medieval churches; and Monza for grand prix lovers! However if you are searching for something more serene Lake Como is a haven for tranquility. For years people have visited Lake Como and returned home refreshed, invigorated and bewitched by its unparalleled beauty! Lakeside walks, lazy lunches, designer shopping and little boutiques, villas, churches and history, parks and beaches all set amongst the vivid lake and mountain backdrop.
Being next door to one of the lake's best hotels, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo (between 440-1300 euros per night!!) you have an array of non resident facilities to choose from. Whether its fine dining in the glass fronted restaurant , cocktails in the elegant piano lounge or pampering in the hotel's gorgeous day spa, you will have opulence and grandeur just a few metres away!
Walking is both easy and enjoyable around this part of the lake. On your doorstep you be will rewarded with fresh bread and fresh groceries from the gorgeous store by the church in Tremezzo village. Just 20 metres across the road you are by the lake and the local ferry port from which you can travel across the lake to Bellagio, Menaggio, or Varenna for example.
The piazzas and streets have wonderful family run cafés and restaurants that are open most days from dawn till late; locals meet on the way to work for a brioche and espresso or after work for a relaxing glass of Prosecco. There is also a good selection of restaurants such as 'Helvetia', 'Red & White', and 'El Timon' which are just a short stroll away.
Tremezzo is in the centre of the recently opened 'greenways'; these give you clear routes (denoted by beautiful green granite slabs and steel markers) for some of the best walks around the lake. You are also within walking distance to Villa Balbianello (of James Bond fame) and the stunning gardens of Villa Carlotta actually surround the swimming pool area.
There is a golden sand man made beach in Lenno, 5 minute drive.
There is a golf club in Menaggio, about 10 minutes drive
Skiing is also available locally in Lanzo 30 minutes, 90 minutes to Madesimo and 2 hours to San Moritz - worth it alone for the scenic drive!
And of course Como itself is a place to visit, especially the old town.

"Lovely pool but lots of steps"
It would have been helpful to know there are two ferry stops close to the accomodation - Tremezzo and Tremezzo Villa Carlotta. A misunderstanding with directions we were given resulted in a tiring 30 … More

My new wife and I have just returned from an amazing 10 honeymoon in Villa Vecchia Poncetta. Lake Como is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been and we spent the whole holiday relaxing and gazing over the lake.
The apartment is well placed, just a couple of minutes' walk of several nice restaurants and bars. The ferry ports are just a few minutes in either direction which allows you easy connections to other places around the lake. We ferried across to Bellagio on a number of occasions either to window shop in the afternoon or for some fine dining and cocktails in the evening.
The apartment itself is very well presented and very clean. It has a very good shower, the kitchen is small but I only used it too chill drinks and cut up fresh bread and cheese from the local store. The bedroom is very spacious and has a very large bed which I must say is the most comfortable bed I have had on holiday. The apartment stays surprisingly cool in the night which combined with a comfortable bed allowed for some very restful sleep.
The pool is situated up several flights of steep steps but once you are up there it is a lovely private area to just relax and it is a real sun trap until about 5pm. The pool is small but is ideal for just cooling off, if you want a larger pool the Grand Hotel Tremezzo (huge hotel next door) will allow you to use their pool which is floating on the lake.
What I liked most about the apartment was very simple. The apartment has a very nice little sitting area with a few chairs and a table. Every day I sat there and ate breakfast (normally fresh bread and cheese) and then before heading out in the evening I would sit there with either a beer or a glass of wine and read a book or just gaze at the view.
Now I must admit we did not do much exploring, we went to Bellagio, Lenno and Mennagio (all in roughly a 5 mile radius) and I highly recommend all these places. I spent the whole holiday relaxing and I must say it is the most relaxing holiday I have ever had. But if you want to be more adventurous the options are there.
To finish I would like to tell you about a mature couple from Germany I spoke to over an afternoon beer. They live on Lake Como for the summer months. We were sat in a little bar overlooking a small harbour. I asked the lady if they had a boat of their own. To which she replied:
"Oh yes, we have two boats - a large one and a small one for the shopping"
A boat just for the shopping! How the other half lives.
