The Brittany region

This part of southern Finistere is an area of many surprises. A blend of idyllic sheltered beaches, picturesque wooded creeks, apple orchards and quaint fishing towns give it a distinctive charm and along with its Celtic heritage and many historical sites of interest give you a great variety from which to choose to explore. As everywhere the weather can be unpredictable but this area is viewed as a micro-climate due to it's closeness to the Gulf Stream.

The best part of Concarneau is it's lively fishing port and the Ville Close, or walled town, which is linked to the rest of the town by a fortified bridge and gateway - here you will find many shops and eating venues as well as an interesting Museum - also here is the point for various boat and fishing trips.

Tregunc is the nearest large village with excellent facilities and tourist information and a 15' drive will take you to Pont Aven with all it's art galleries, Gaugin museum and picturesque river setting.

A 5' drive away will take you along the coast and many spectacular beaches and coastal walks reaching the furthest tip of Point de Trevignon where you can enjoy a delicious crepe and Boule of local cider and watch the glorious sunsets.

Further afield our favourites include Pontivy, Quimper, Vannes, Brest, Foret Fousenant where you can sample excellent seafood at The Vieux Port, and the wonderful Parc Botanique near Pont-L'Abbe - also to be discovered are chateaux, and the typical small thatched houses.

"Just perfect"

We stayed at La Maison Rose in July 2013. It was a great place to stay for us. We enjoyed the privacy and seclusion, although near to everything we needed. The beach was close and in fact, it was very central to the places we wanted to explore in the finistere area of Brittany. The house was exactly as described and was extremely comfortable and a lovely place to come back to at the end of a busy day exploring. We would recommend this house to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing stay. The owners were excellent communicators and payment and access to the house ideal. Lovely holiday.

"The best kind of holioday is one where you want to return again and again"

La Maison Rose is pleasantly situated in quiet but not isolated surroundings. It was clean and comfortable with a well kept spaceous fore and aft garden. We have stayed there as a couple and with our grown up children. We consider that it would be ideal and safe to take our grandchildren if we are lucky enough to be blessed with any. It's ideal for a short or long stay quiet or not so quiet holiday. If you love the outdoors the gardens are thriving with butterflies such as Red Admirals and there is a resident Magpie who loves B.B.Q. leftovers. His anvil is the grey rock alng the left side of the bacl lawn. We had a relaxing holiday sunbathing, water colouring, identifying butterflies as that was what we wanted but La Maison Rose offers so much more if you want to look for it. Watching the French soaps also improved my language skills. The beaches are a ten minute drive away with a choice of a safe cove ideal for young children and longer open beaches along the coast for sport and walks. For the more adventurous a small harbour offers a chance to clamber over rocks to fish, find rock pools or just relax watching the waves. Fresh seafood is brought in by boats several times a day and can be bought at the harbour. A small friendly Sunday market offers a wide selection of French cheeses, local produce and a chance to sample crepes and gallettes. There are restaurants right along the coast opffering a selection of menu's including seafood, moules and huitres. Concarneau is a short drive for an inspiring day to visit a walled city/castle with restaurants and shops inside. Musicians usually perform and last year we listened to medievel music whilst enjoying an enormous icecream of which there are about twenty flavours to choose from such as salted caramel and rum and raisin. Concarneau also boasts a large market. We loved it at La Maison Rose and are going back again in 2013.
