Home description
This impressive granite barn forms part of the ancient Tregothnan Estate, set in idyllic countryside only a few miles from the city of Truro. Converted with the utmost attention to detail, it now forms Gare Barn Cottage and Gare Farmhouse, which is occupied by the tenant farmer who farms cereal crops and sheep on the surrounding land, with an eye to nature conservation. The Tregothnan Estate is one of the largest and oldest country estates in Cornwall and produces the only tea grown on the only tea plantation in Britain.
The reversed accommodation provides an en suite double bedroom with French doors leading to the garden on the ground floor, and two further bedrooms which share a well appointed bathroom. Upstairs, the attractive open plan living-room stretches the entire length of the cottage, incorporating generous living, dining and kitchen areas. Impeccably decorated and furnished to highlight the authentic features of the original farm building, much thought has been given to providing every comfort for a perfect holiday. Guests are welcome to enjoy walks around the surrounding farmland. Beautiful sandy beaches at Pendower and Carne are nearby, as are the sailing waters of St Mawes. Falmouth beckons further south, and the Eden Project and Heligan Gardens are a short drive away.

The West Country / Cornwall region
Cornwall is Britain’s south westerly treasure. From the rugged coastline of the north coast to the soft beauty of the south, from the crashing surf of Fistral Beach to the historic harbour of Fowey, from the remoteness of the west to the high class restaurants of Padstow, there is something for everybody.
The Roseland Peninsula is one of the very special places of the British Isles. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it has so much to offer the visitor, a week is simply not enough! From breathtaking coastal walks to sailing in the Carrick Roads, from historic castles to stunning sub tropical gardens, from picturesque country pubs to stylish first class restaurants, the Roseland really has everything you could wish for in a Cornish holiday!
St Mawes St Mawes has changed dramatically over the last 100 years from a sleepy fishing village to the stylish holiday destination it now is. Overlooking its stunning bay, St Mawes is now the yachtsmans paradise with stylish hotels and lots for the visitor to see & do. Take a stroll along the harbour and along the road to the Castle where you can get breathtaking views over the Carrick Roads to Falmouth. Spend some time sitting on the terrace of the Rising Sun, the St Mawes Hotel or in the little alley outside the Victory Inn and watch the world go by. Take a ferry to Falmouth to visit the National Maritime Museum or Pendennis Castle. The little Place Ferry will take you to St Anthonys Head or there are numerous boat trips you can take around the estuary.
St Just in Roseland No visit to the Roseland is complete without seeing the beautiful church and churchyard at St Just. Probably the only sub tropical churchyard in the British Isles, it is a beautiful & tranquil place.
Portscatho & Gerrans Portscatho lies in the South-westerly corner of Gerrans Bay on the Roseland peninsula. The East-facing cove affords shelter from the prevailing sou-westerly winds and this meant it was ideal as a base for the pilchard fleets of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and still is, although on a much smaller scale, an active fishing port today. The same shelter makes for safe swimming and its proximity to many fine sandy beaches means its a family favourite. Portscatho is also the artists haven on the Roseland and there are a number of galleries to browse. Spindrift Gallery is a fine example and has a lovely selection of ceramics, jewellery, studio glass and many other items. Gerrans at the top to the hill has a fine old church.
Carrick Roads views The views of the Fal Estuary (the great natural harbour known as the Carrick Roads) are spectacular from many vantage points around the Roseland. St Mawes Castle or St Anthonys Head are the best places. In the height of summer, during Falmouth Week the sight of hundreds of yachts sailing around the beautiful waters is simply unmissable!
Portloe Portloe is considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of the Roseland peninsula and one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall. Its steep sided valleys has meant that it has managed to escape development over the years and many buildings differ little from when they were built. Sir John Betjeman said of Portloe "One of the least spoiled and most impressive of Cornish fishing villages".
Veryan Veryan is most famous for its nineteenth century thatched Round Houses. There are five in all, two pairs of which stand at each end of the village and another in the centre. They were originally built by a missionary named Reverend Jeremiah Trist for his daughters. In a round house there are no corners where the devil can hide. A crucifix on the top of each one adds extra protection!
Tregony / Gare area
The farm of Gare is in a wonderfully peaceful location on the northern part of the Roseland Peninsula. There are plenty of walks around the lovely countryside and there is lots to do on the Roseland itself.
The village of Tregony often referrred to as the 'gateway to the Roseland'. The exceptionally wide Fore Street is a relic from the days when this was a busy port and market town with considerable traffic. The port has long since silted up due in part to china clay workings up stream, but Tregony has retained its charm. Tregony has an unusual clock tower on Fore Street and the seventeenth century almshouses which boast an unusual wooden gallery. The site of a twelfth century Norman castle known as ‘Treg-ney’ from which the village got its name is situated on Tregony Hill.
The woods and riverside in the area between here and Ruan Lanihorne are fantastic to explore. The river is a firm favourite with ornithologists the magical Lamorran Woods are alive with bluebells in the spring. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, the Eden Project and the city of Truro are only a short drive away from Tregony.
The Roseland Peninsula is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and forms one of the finest sections of Cornwall's south Coast. From Mevagissey to St Mawes and bordered by the Fal Estuary to the west, the Roseland Peninsula has been drawing visitors for years with its splendid coastline, unique gardens, historic villages and superb sailing waters. A truly magnificent part of Cornwall, the Roseland Peninsula is a wonderful place to spend a memorable holiday. Visit the unique waterside village of St Mawes, the most beautiful churchyard in Britain at St Just in Roseland, the amazing Lost Gardens of Heligan, walk some of the dramatic coastline around Portscatho or just relax on some of the most idyllic beaches in Cornwall.
How to get there
A car really is essential to visit the Roseland properly, however you can fly to Newquay Airport from a number of regional airports and Cornwall is served well by a mainline train service. You will receive full arrival instructions once the balance of your holiday is paid.
