Home description
Dammuso by the Sea is a modern villa created from an old fisherman’s house built with local stones, for 6/8 people. There are 2 bedrooms with 3 beds (1 room with 2 beds), 3 bathrooms and a living/kitchen room. There is a large covered veranda as well as 2 large terraces. The villa is just on the sea border, plunged deep in nature, set between pine wood and blue waters.
The villa is set in Pantelleria, a rocky island between Sicily and Tunisia, famous for its natural beauty. This is the ideal holiday destination for relaxing, snorkelling and trekking.

The Sicily region
Pantelleria is an island of volcanic origin with a surface of 83Km2, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, between Tunisia (about 70km) and Sicily (110Km).
The particular shape of the island is due to the repeated alternating of eruptions and the subsequent collapses of the different layers of rock deposited by the volcanic activity. One of the most dramatic examples is the “Salto della Vecchia” (the jump of the old woman) a 240m high cliff hanging directly above the sea (160,000 years ago); the “Caldera di Kartibucale” (e – 80,000 years ago); and the valley of “monastero” (the monastery). Signs that the island of Pantelleria is still volcanically active can be found both on land, as the natural steam baths or on the sea coast, as the hot water springs (the water reaches temperatures of about 90° Celsius).
Pantelleria enjoys mild winters and warm summers, when winds or light breezes alleviate the heat. For many centuries Pantelleria has been a mandatory passageway for all the movements of people and goods between North Africa and Sicily. In a time when sailors relied on their eyes to find their direction, Pantelleria conveniently laid a day of sail away from both Sicily and Africa, making it an ideal layover harbour. Most of the names of the different districts and places of Pantelleria are of Arabic origin, and different words still in use amongst the inhabitants of the island come from this civilisation. The peculiar buildings of the island, the Dammusi, are a further sign of their passage. The Arabs introduced this kind of building, which exploited the abundant materials of the island (black volcanic stones) and are capable of keeping the interiors cold during the summers and dry during the winters. Moreover the characteristic dune-shaped roofs of the Dammusi perform the important function of collecting the rain water, the essential element for life, which enabled the development of agricultural activities on the island. The Arabs also introduced new agricultural techniques for irrigation, the processes of parching grapes, tomatoes and other produces.
Trapani / Pantelleria area
FLORA AND FAUNA The flora of Pantelleria is typically Mediterranean, though it varies greatly depending on the height and the distance from the sea. Close to the shores only the more resistant plants grow, such as capers, the Indian figs, and the agaves, together with lavender, rosemary, thyme, sage and other wild herb plants. Further up, amongst the cultivated fields it is possible to find different fruit trees (oranges, lemons), almond trees, grape vines and many wild flowers. Climbing up towards the mountain the flora gradually changes towards more alpine features, with cypresses, wild berries and proper pine woods. There is nothing more beautiful after a day at the beach than taking a walk to enjoy a beautiful sunset from the top of the mountain (800 mt); the island in the foreground and the seemingly endless Mediterranean sea reflecting the last orange and purple lights of the dying day.
The sea fauna is very rich and if lucky it can also be enjoyed from land, as from time to time it is possible to witness the migration of the tunas (towards the end of September) or the playful games of dolphins. Different migrating birds use the island as a resting place during their journeys, and others, such as seagulls and wild hawks, live on it all year round. Noumerous wild rabbits populate the island. The richness of the flora and fauna of the island is reflected in its intense and flavoursome cuisine, where all the different tastes are enhanced by the abundance of sun and the most traditional methods of cultivation. Pantelleria is also famous for its wine "Passito", the capers and olive oil.
ARCHAEOLOGY AND CULTURE In addition to the natural beauties of Pantelleria, other places of interest are the archaeological sites around the island (from the Acropolis of Saint Mark, to the Phoenician tombs), and in general the peculiar architecture present on Pantelleria and the many churches around it. Furthermore, the island offers unusual geological formations that are bound to fascinate an expert as much as an amateur.
The sea remains the main attractions of the island, but not the only one. Access from land is not always easy, but everywhere around Pantelleria the sea offers a mesmerising spectacle framed by the wild rocky shores .
