Enquire nowThe Sicily region
Sicily is the land where the wheat fields which in spring wave under the Grecian breeze, the seagulls which hover over the coast of Virgilian heroes, the rows of grape vines where Bacco melted under the Mediterranean sky, the sea where Odysseus pursued his familiar tales, the beloved peak of the Goddess Venus, the taste of freshly caught fish woven together with the aromas of the land fertilised by Ceres, the mythical island behind which the red, hot sun sleeps.
This is the Sicily, a land of myth, of sea and sun, and of dreams.
The Trapani / Castellammare del Golfo area
The beautiful castle which gave its name to the town faces a sea famous for its most noble tuna fishing activity.
In the XII Century the Arab geographer Al Edrisi spoke of the town's port ( which he called Al Madarig ) "where the nets used for tuna fishing are thrown", and which the Romans called "the town Cetaria" ( large sea animals ). Until thirty years ago this coast boasted the richest and the most famous tuna factories of the areas of Castellammare and Scopello.
Originally a port belonging to the very famous town of Segesta ( which Tolomeo named "Emporium Segestanorum" ), Castellammare was the central interest of the Normans, Svevis, Angioini and Aragons, and in the XVI century it once again became a very important centre for the loading of wheat produced in the hinterland.
The port is still today the town's pulsing heart together with the eighteenth century Matrice where at the end of August the miracle of the rescue of the town is celebrated, an event which took place in 1718 by Maria Santissima del Soccorso who descended from Mount Inici to defend the castle and the town's inhabitants from the English float.
To the west, further beyond the ancient village of Scopello, one reaches the Zingaro Nature Reserve, the first to be established in Sicily in 1982.
Furthermore Castellammare is set near important sights such as Segesta, Selinunte and Erice. Segesta it is one of the most important archaeological sites of the Mediterranean; you can visit the Doric Temple and the Hellnistic theatre. Classical performances are held in the summer and new excavations continue to give birth to new discoveries.
Selinunte is famous for the Acropolis, the Oriental Hill, the two Necropolises, the Sanctuary of the Malaphores, the blue sea and the green of the countryside offer an unforgettable view.
Erice is a medieval village on the peak of the mountain that overlooks the city of Trapani, is a place full of myth and history. There are numerous churches, corners full of charm and the Castle of Venere which all fit into the beautiful landscape and the marvellous panoramas.
