The Sicily region

Sicily is not so much an island as a continent, where all Mediterranean civilisations are present. For the Greeks an Normans in particular it was an Eldorado, the Promised Land to fulfil dreams in. Indeed, in no other place in the world did the Greeks build as many temples and theatres as in Sicily and the Normans so many palaces and cathedrals.
In addition to natural beauties, Sicily offers the visitor the three thousand years of history of the peoples that settled there, bringing with them not only their own art but their own languages, their own flora and their own gastronomy.
Thus Sicily was enriched by its various conquerors, who plundered and burnt it but impressed the signs of their identities on it. One might say, more or less paradoxically, that being conquered by certain peoples is a true privilege. Among these peoples, there were first of all the Greeks, who put Sicily into the circuit of major history.
Sicily is a great open-air museum, which reveals to the visitor the monuments of the different peoples that settled there.
The Trapani / Scopello area
The ancient seaside town of Scopello is believed to stand on the site of the ancient town of Cetaria, which got this name because of the exceptional abundance of tuna fish in its sea. The Arabs called that place "Iscubul" and it was they who, after the destruction of Cetaria, restructured the tuna station.
Now the complex is no longer working, the activity of tuna fishing is no longer lucrative, but everything is still in working order, that is to say the stores, the farms, the boats and nets: they are silent witnesses to an ancient maritime civilisation which has now almost disappeared in the whole of Sicily.
The natural environment of Scopello has two main features: the splendid Tyrrhenian coasts, which to the east are low, open, fairly straight, while to the west they are high, full of inlets and steep. The coast of Scopello has high rocks, little unspoilt bays, rugged boulders and steep needles; this is absolutely one of the finest stretches of Sicilian coast and also includes the truly extraordinary Zingaro shore. The Zingaro park is a happy natural paradise, which has miraculously survived, intact, in its exceptional primitive beauty.

The villa was clean, extremely comfortable and well equipped. The views from the veranda were wonderful and although slightly out from Scopello it is an easy walk into the little village with it's plentiful places to eat. If you are looking for a secluded, quiet holiday Villa Marinella would be hard to beat. We also used the car hire service based in Castellammare di Golfo that was recommended by Salvatore, including the airport collection on arrival and departure. This worked well, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area. A downside was that there were no maps available at the car rental office. Tips and guidelines - a phone is essential for contacting Salvatore and there are plentiful 'hole in the wall' cash machines - but cashing traveller cheques is impossible! To summarise a good holiday at a reasonable price. |

We have had 2 real good stays at Villa Marinella. The host Mr Salvatore is helpful and gives good advice of places to see in the lovely area. It is a great view from the large veranda where you can see the road to the village, fields and the sea. Behind you have a impressing mountain. Its a nice house and beautiful surroundings. |
