The Sicily region
Sicily is more than an island! It is Italy's largest island and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Our island is a unique place full of art, archeology, history, folklore and breathtaking scenery. And, of course, great food. Sicily is almost a nation unto itself. Because of its strategic location, Sicily was invaded over the centuries by many armies, and was once the site of Roman, Greek and Phoenician colonies and now you can find still its ruins.
But Sicily is also nature with spectacular places and its spectacular sea, clean and blue, its good weather and its food and wine, the best in Italy!
The Western Sicily is rich of places you can visit:
The city of Marsala, was the major Carthaginian base in Sicily during its wars against Greece and Rome. The city name comes from Arabic for great port or Ali’s port. Marsala played an important role in Italian history as the landing point of Italian national hero Garibaldi’s one thousand red shirt combatants who fought for the reunification of Italy. Visit Marsala for its history, its sandy beaches, its Lagoon( Stagnone Reserve) and its food.
The town of Erice is about a half mile above sea level. You’ll love its two castles, Pepoli Castle dating from Saracen (Arabic) times and Venus Castle dating from Norman times, built on what some say was the most famous Greek temple dedicated to the goddess Venus. The city contains the remains of walls from the days of the Phoenicians and the little known Elymians, perhaps descendants of the Trojans.
The abandoned city of Segesta is home to one of the best-preserved Greek Temples, built by Elymians under Greek rule around 430 B.C. Legend has it that they built the temple to impress the Athenians of their wealth in order to enlist Athen’ss against a nearby city supported by Siracuse. Once Athen’s envoys Segesta left work on the temple stopped. The temple remains incomplete, but magnificent. Segesta also boasts the ruins of a Greek amphitheater that presents classic Greek theater (in Italian), a Norman castle, and a small church.
Selinunte was the site of a Greek colony founded in the Seventh Century B. C. This colony prospered for hundreds of years until destroyed by the Carthaginians in 409 B. C. Thousands of its inhabitants were slaughtered and most who weren’t killed were enslaved. The city’s seven temples were destroyed; only one has been restored but the ancient market has been excavated. In Selinunte visit archeological park and the beach.
Egadi Island is 3 islands just in front Marsala city, attainable from Marsala port in about 30 minutes. The most turistic islands is Favignana with its ancient town and its spectacular sea. Marettimo is the most wild island, a very paradise outside the world.
Zingaro Reserve, the first and the largest Natural Reserve in Sicily. San Vito lo Capo, a very beautiful sandy beach Trapani Mazara Scopello Palermo Agrigento
Trapani / Marsala area
In the course of a millenary history, most of the ancient mediterranean peoples settled in Marsala; so, today, the wide territory of our town shows to the visitors all the marks left by these peoples. Here you can see Phoenician ruins and artcrafts, as well as one of their ships: hidden and preserved under the the sea for more than 2000 years, now it is shown in The Archeological Museum "Baglio Anselmi". Not far away, you will find a Roman insula, with its marvellous mosaics, and the old Spanish fortifications and town gates.
The centre of Marsala is elegant and precious, rich of squares, churches and other monuments, first of all the Cathedral and the St. Peter old monastery, that today is the cultural heart of the town: inside, you can visit the Risorgimental and Garibaldinian and the Civic Archaeological Museums. Downtown is charming and animated, especially in summer nights, and offers relax and enjoyment to everybody; restaurants and pizzerias let you to appreciate the rich local cooking, in summer wine bars and pubs are open all along the night.
Marsala lengthens on the sea and from the sea it is embraced and it is a very beautiful place in Western Sicily. Just near holiday house the town sea-cost, a fashionable balcony on Egadi Islands and then Capo Boeo, the extreme point of Western Sicily. On South of Marsala a a long line of sandy beach that extends about 10 kms. They alternates free beaches and you equips, gilded sand and restaurant on the sea, crystalline sea and colored umbrella. The sea conquers the European Blue flag. On the North of Marsala we find a surreal landscape: the lagoon of the Stagnone. It is a Natural Reserve and a greater lagoon of the whole Sicily...the sea, the verdant islets, the reeds, the mills to wind, the white dunes of salt, the tiles and… sunsets that dye the sky of the colors of the purple, of the gold, of the blue. The characteristic of the Reserve is surely the presence of the Salt pans, artificial tubs for the extraction of the salt. And the presence of the Wind Mills, restructured almost all, and of these enormous white dunes of salt it makes the landscape a picture of other times. Among the Mills, one, that of Ettore Infersa, entertains the Museum of the Salt. In some season you can also see migratory birds wild Ducks, Herons and White Flamingos or Rosa. Mozia: Among the low waters of the Reserve of the Stagnone 4 islets appear on the surface. Among these Mozia, a real museum to the open one of the punico-Phoenician civilization. They are only few hundred meters to separate the island of Mozia from the dry land. Anciently a road connected her, now this last is submerged, but still visible and practicable with the low tide. Today Mozia is easily reached in 15 minutes with some typical boats.
