The Sicily region
Sicily is the largest and most luxurious island of the Mediterranean, has a richer and more eventful past than any of the other islands dotted around the Mediterranean. Throughout the ages, every great nearby civilisation has at one time turned his attention towards the island transforming its landscape and people but never conquering its independent spirit. Sicily has been the crossroads of the ancient world : Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Aragonese and Bourbons have held the island, all contributing to its rich artistic heritage.
Nowhere in your travels can you discover a richer and more diverse archeological treasure-trove : from the world famous "Valley of the Temples" in Agrigento, to hundreds of other wonders as the impressing Greek theatres of Taormina, Siracusa and Segesta, the stupendous temples of Selinunte and Segesta, the Arab mosques in Palermo, the outstanding Norman cathedrals of Monreale, Palermo and Cefalù, the splendid baroque churces and buldings of Palermo, Noto, Catania and Acireale, the medieval towns of Erice and Taormina and the Phoenician colony of Mozia you will admire in the natural reserve of Stagnone Islands– just to mention a few.
Besides Sicily has one of the most pleasant climates in Europe, and every season has its own attraction. The average temperature in the deep midwinter is of 10-12 °,and in sunny days it can be warm enough to walk around in a tee-shirt. In February the almond trees are in blossom. In March and April the wild flowers begin to bloom all over Sicily and on the coast the first bathers start taking to the waters. In June the sea is warm but the beaches are still deserted , except at weekends when the first Sicilians start to brave the waters. The fruit trees are laden with cherries , plums, peaches , apricots. In July and especially in August the coast is crowded but the beautiful areas of the interior ( and a few "undiscovered" parts of the coast ) are however relatively unfrequented. In September there is the grapes harvest or "vendemmia", temperatures remain very comfortable and the island retains that summer feeling , but without the crowds.
October is one of the most beautiful periods for country walking with the vines turning to red and orange in the vast vineyards in Marsala. In November often the temperatures stay in the high twenties during the day, even if it can rain. In December the temperatures during the day can still be extremely agreeable.
Trapani / Marsala area
Marsala's origins are very ancient. In the 8th c. BC the Phoenicians founded the city of Mozia (Motya) in the nearby Stagnone lagoon. Subsequently, refugees from Motya, fleeing from invasion and destruction by Dionysius I of Syracuse, founded Marsala. It became an important Carthaginian military base. After falling under Roman domination. The Romans were followed by the Vandals of Gaiseric and then the Byzantines. When it fell to the Muslirns they called it Marsa-Allah, Port of Allah. The town prospered considerably in the Middle Ages as an important centre of trade and commerce. The Normans took Marsala in 1072, rebuilt the castle and constructed churches and convents. In the 18th c. some enterprising Englishmen set up the first establishment producing Marsala wine, which was to have considerable impact on the local economy. On the west side Marsala coast, you’ll find beautiful beaches with all amenities such as restaurants, pubs, discos, water sports. On the east side of the coast, you’ll admire the beautiful scenary of the natural reserve the the Stagnone islands.
At a couple of miles are the beautiful salt works and windmills of Marsala and the landing stage for Mozia island. The Egadi islands are just a short hydrofoil from Marsala (30 min.) or ferry journey from Trapani. The main attractions of these islands are the crystal clear waters (especially Cala Rossa in Favignana), the splendid mountain and coastal walking and the laid back atmosphere of island life.
