The Sicily region

Food and wine from this region are a gourmet’s delight. With the prolific Mediterranean on its doorstep, fish is inevitably the number one choice, although there are many delicious varieties of local pasta. Within the village of Scopello lie a wonderful restaurant, cafes and a few local shops. Easily reached is an organic market where fresh produce is picked hourly from the surrounding fields.
It would also be a great injustice not to mention the ‘Tonnara’, a disused Tuna fishery with its now infamous sea views and the ‘Lo Zingaro’ National Park; a seven kilometre long line of magnificent inlets, grottoes, low reefs and fantastic sandy coves.
Sicily keeps a special place welcome for the discerning traveller who appreciates the finer elements of life, and who looks for more from a holiday than lying by the pool.
All the ancient civilizations that succeeded in conquering Sicily left behind them an outstanding heritage of artistic achievement. Visit the extraordinary and unique Greek site of Segesta, with its Doric temple and amphitheatre situated in pristine countryside, standing alone in tranquil beauty amidst nature. A little further afield is the enclave of Erice with its delightful medieval ambience and breathtaking hilltop location, filled with castles, churches and winding cobbled streets.
The capital, Palermo is a mere 70km from Scopello, but do not go with an itinerary; no map does justice to a city so colonised, yet so proud of its identity.
The Trapani / Scopello area
It would be foolish to try and describe the island’s exceptional cuisine in such a small space. One could never do justice to an art form, which has taken hundreds of years to develop, not to mention several invasions.
This western coastline is filled with magnificent inlets, unspoilt bays and splendid beaches. Picturesque seascapes follow one another like a beautiful string of pearls. Calabianca with its turquoise waters and grottoes is followed by Guidaloca, a sandy, pebbly beach with a limpid sea of ever changing colours offering a variety of water sports. Nearby is Cala Rossa where a pathway leads you down steep rocks to a charming cove with an underground grotto. Finally, you arrive at the secluded bays and inlets, which form the spectacular Zingaro nature reserve.
There are numerous local places from where you can hire boats or alternatively several agencies offer excursions along the coast past the Zingaro. From Trapani you can take a ferry and visit the island of Pantelleria or the three exotic Egadi Islands.
Sicily is at its finest out of season, in spring or October when the crowds have eased and the temperature has dipped slightly. It marks the time of the traditional grape or olive harvest, while throughout the year one of the greatest attractions of visiting this western tip is the prospect of sampling exceptionally good regional wines in and around Marsala. Otherwise why not learn the secrets of great Italian cooking while you relax in serious style at any of our villas? For those wanting to stretch themselves, the Sicilian hills are bathed in history, with beautiful churches and stunning mountain walks. The coastline also offers some of the most idyllic scenery and local people who have yet to turn their natural disposition for hospitality into an industry.
To help you put together a unique itinerary, we are able to offer a menu of holiday extras such as cookery lessons, painting courses, wine tours, grape harvesting, pottery classes, yoga sessions, diving excursions and boat trips. Alternatively a cook, daily maid service, chef and private tour guide can be arranged and tailored to suit each group.
