The Sicily region

The discovery of Western Sicily: melting pot of cultures, lapped by a turquoise sea, flavored with a kitchen that rarely disappoints, this region has really everything. To the north, the Zingaro Nature Reserve is a paradise for beach lovers and trekkers. Backpacking offers approximately 7 kilometers of coastline dotted with small cove with crystal clear water.

Discovering the northern part of Western Sicily, Segesta in Castellammare del Golfo passing through San Vito lo Capo and its beautiful beaches, such as Baia Santa Margherita, and landscapes punctuated by acres of vineyards that give life to fine white wines. Segesta, with its temple and its theater, it is only the appetizer of what you can admire a few kilometers further south, on the southern coast. The ancient Greek city of Selinunte dominates, with its temples and its Acropolis, the sea and the coast, creating a unique landscape.

Going north, and after a stop inland to visit the beautiful Salemi, is followed by three port cities, each one different and each with its own reason. Mazara del Vallo, home to one of the largest fishing fleets in Europe, is a pretty town with narrow streets where beautiful and well worth getting lost stopping here and there to admire the cathedral, built in the eleventh century, Piazza della Repubblica, the Satyr Museum which houses one of the few works in bronze has come down from ancient and beautiful buildings in the neighborhood of the Casbah.

Trapani

At the foot of rugged Mount Erice , which seems to watch over it , Trapani stretches down to the sea , on a promontory stretching arched. Along the coast adjacent to the city and then gradually along the coast to Marsala , heaps of salt biancheggiano along the shore , guarded by windmills , with their big shovels, silhouetted against the sea similar to fantastic monsters. Opposite, often shrouded in a light mist that blurs the boundaries , are three islands , the Egadi , who welcome the visitor who arrives by sea . Small city , Trapani, in its cradle of the sea, the look a bit ' of those who resigned hides his treasures to show them only to those who know how to appreciate . The origins of Trapani can be traced back to the Sicani , here they founded a village , but perhaps , as narrated in ancient writers , was built on sickle Ceres dropped while , desperate , wandering the world in search of her daughter Persephone, abducted by Pluto . What is certain is that on these shores took turns numerous more or less fantastic . Starting with the Cyclops , came the Elimi , the Giants , the Trojans, the Phoenicians and many others, but Trapani gained importance only in 260 BC, when Amilcare did bring here the inhabitants of Erice, which had long been the emporium ( port) . Under the Romans, the city lost much of its prestige . The only major event was the arrival of the Jews, who found themselves so well to found here a very important community . Trapani followed in the shadow of the events in Sicily , returning to the stage of history in the thirteenth century , when Ferdinand of Aragon granted their approval . Trade flourished : salt, tuna and refined artistic coral, precious stones , wood were sold and exported all over the known world. The city was a base for ships of the crusaders on their way to the Holy Land , and housed the consulates of Catalans , Genoese , Venetians , Pisans , French and many others . The apex of power was reached in the course of the government of Charles V, who landed here on his return from Tunis and granted special privileges to the city , allowing it to further improve its position. In the seventeenth century were built the Baroque buildings which still characterize its historic center .
