The Sicily region

Lying as it does between Europe and Africa, Sicily, the oft-called 'melting pot of the ancient world', has been touched, changed and marked by a myriad of cultures - first the Greeks and the Romans, then the Arabs and Normans, and finally, the French, Spanish and Italians, all of them contributing to an unparalleled historical legacy.

This multi-faceted lineage is evidenced in the fascinating mix of art and architecture - including two of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world - as well as in the mixed appearances of the inhabitants, ranging from the red-haired and blonde and blue-eyed Norman descendants, to the dark-eyed Mediterranean natives.

THE CLIMATE..in Sicily is known as “Mediterranean” which means that the summers are hot and dry and the winters are mild with light rainfall. The summer season can often seem long, as Spring and Autumn offer a continuation of the warm temperatures and long hours of sunlight.

Trapani / Scopello area

One can admire a beautiful view of the city from the panoramic viewpoint along the main road to Scopello, another coastal marvel.

The ancient fishing village of Scopello is said to be on the site of the mythical city of Cetaria, thus named for its exceptional abundance of tuna fish. Once Cetaria was destroyed, the Arabs rebuilt the tuna fishery naming the
village "Iscabul".

There are several good restaurants in the surroundings, where you can taste the authentic and excellent Sicilian cuisine and wine.

Today tuna fishing is no longer continued, the complex in is disuse but all the equipment remains in perfect working order; the nets, boats and houses are all silent testimony to an ancient fishing civilisation. Visit also the ancient towns,Segesta and Erice famous for there Greek theatres and tempels.

Scopello is renowned both for its crystal-clear waters which allow one to observe the sea bed and for its rock towers (faraglioni).

The Bay of Guidaloca, another pearl in a long string in the area, can be found between a succession of magnificent landscapes between Castellammare and Scopello. A large inlet characterised by its crystal-clear waters and low sea bed, surrounded by rocks and beautiful sea caves. Following the long coastal walk past Scopello, you reach the Nature Reserve of Lo Zingaro, boasting scenery of immeasurable splendour, rich in flora and fauna miraculously intact in their extraordinary and primitive beauty.

The natural reserve Lo Zingaro is nearby, it includes mountains which rise from the sea, covered by paths which lead the visitor to the discover of landscapes of incomparable beauty, in which the particular light makes the vegetation's and rocks' colours brighter, in opposition to the various bleu-sea tones of the coast. Zingaro Nature Reserve is perfect to walk in the nature, looking to the birds and to the beautiful landscape...there are several little beaches where you can stop to have a break.
