The Sicily region
The Place It's more than an island! Discover Sicily and discover the world. The world's first multicultural society, Sicily is Italy's (and Europe's) most historically cosmopolitan region, having been ruled by Asians, Africans and Europeans. Sicily is black and white and a million shades of gray. There's no other place on Earth like Sicily. Our island is a unique place full of art, archeology, history, folklore and breathtaking scenery. And, of course, great food. Sicily is almost a nation unto itself. The enchanting land where Archimedes taught and Saint Paul preached was a Greek colony, a Roman province, an Arab emirate and a Norman kingdom. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Swabians, Angevins and Aragonese made Sicily their own, leaving behind an eclectic history that you can still touch today
Trapani / Scopello area
The 1.620 hectares of "Lo Zingaro" extend in one of the most evocative landscapes of Sicily, in a piece of land which, advancing in the south Tyrrhenian sea, closes on the west side the Gulf of Castellammare. It is the first natural reserve instituted in Sicily (6 May 1981), it is more than seven kilometers long and spreads along the coast. It is situated in one of the few still integral places in all the Island. It includes mountains which rise from the sea, covered by paths which lead the visitor to the discover of landscapes of incomparable beauty, in which the particular light makes the vegetation's and rocks' colours brighter, in opposition to the various bleu-sea tones of the coast. Inaccessible precipices on which "Pistacia Lentisca" and heathers, brooms and "Euphorbia", Oleasters (Olea Oleaster) and "Terebinti", survivors of that Mediterranean bush that once covered all the territory, give shelter to Hawks, Buzzards, Kestrels, Swifts and Imperials Crows.
How to get there
Scopello is perhaps the more evocative and colourful place of the entire gulf of Castellammare. It is a small village risen at the end of the 18th century around the "baglio", on a previous arab country house. In the low-lying wonderful cove limited by the stacks and protected by old towers, there is the "tonnara" (thunny-fishing structure), known sine a long time ago (it is mentioned in documents of the year 1200); it has worked until few years ago, together with the"baglio", the buildings and the warehouses. You can reach it from Castellammare driving through the state street 187 in the direction of Trapani, deviating at Km 32.4, passing the bay of Guidaloca on which there is a 16th century cylindrical tower.
