Castellammare is an important tourist centre famous for pottery and swimming/thermal bathing. It is loved for its mild climate, wonderful beachs and breath taking scenary, making it an holiday destination

Overlooked by Mount Inici, the picturesque town with its fishing port and castle is lovely. In the east is the magnificent Spiaggia Playa, a golden sandy beach, with clear crystalline water. In the west until San Vito Lo Capo, the coast becomes rocky and jagged, with coves of extraordinary beauty from Cala Bianca, Guidaloca to The Zingaro Reserve.

Some diving centres offer scuba diving excursions to discover the beautiful coral sea beds.

Sailing clubs offer sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, water skiing and swimming courses.

There are some boat excursions and pescaturismo (tourist fishing excursions) from Castellammare to San Vito Lo Capo, highlighting the local areas of beauty and marine life.

The port and the old centre town with its restaurants exclusive, bars, disco-pubs is the night life centre of the town.

The local cuisine offers fabulous fresh fish. Local fleets night time haul of mullet, sargo, umbrine, saddled bream, rock fish, octopus, squid, lobster are on the harbour market every morning.

It was founded as a marine trading centre for the merchants of nearby Segesta; used later by the Phoenicians and then the Romans. In medieval times it became a stronghold with the castle built by the Arabs. Between the XV and the XVIII centuries, the port became a strategic point for commercial flow.

The castle, of Arab origin, enlarged in Norman and Swabian times, was the most important fortress of Western Sicily, and contains elements of great architectural importance. The medieval spiral stairway sits inside a circular keep, with the door and architraves featuring late gothic decorative patterns.

The castle holds an interesting scientific-museum centre featuring many exhibitions: archaeology with anchor stocks and Roman amphorae; marine activity and equipment for sailing and tuna fishing; Nostra Principalissima Patrona dedicated to the festivities in honour of the Madonna del Soccorso; and“Castellamare on set”, with documentation about films, series, advertisements and reality shows filmed in Castellammare.

The museum highlights cultural and landscape heritage and cultural and entertainment events. In the east wing there is the Museo dell'Acqua e dei Mulini - a showcase of water and windmills and the Ethno- anthropological museum "Annalisa Buccellato".

In an old fishermen's house in the ancient maritime town is a small Museum of the Sea which holds various pieces of marine tools and equipment from tuna fish warehouses, once numerous in the gulf.

The Mother Church is the most important of the religious buildings. It holds the statue in majolica of the Madonna del Soccorso.

The church of Madonna delle Scale (XVII century) is situated on the slope of the mountain.

The ex-monastery of the Padri Crociferi (1659) is now the Town Hall. In the immediate vicinity of Castellammare, the baglio (rural fortified structure) of Inici and the castle of Balata di Baida, have resisted the tests of time.

Celebrations to honour the patron saint Maria SS del Soccorso, run from the 19th to 21st August. In the port, there is a remarkable historical re-enactment of the miracle carried out by the Madonna in 1718, when five English ships who were pursuing a Spanish merchant ship were made to flee. Spectators can enjoy the spectacular fireworks, play games on the beach and in the water, and shop at various stalls.

At Christmas, Castellammare boasts a variety of entertainment including a live nativity scene in the town hamlet of Balata di Baida.

The small village of Scopello is set on a rock overlooking the stunning sea, the majestic stacks and an old tonnara (tuna warehouse). The main building is the baglio,a typical rural construction with a large internal courtyard situated on the site of an Arab hamlet. In front of the square is the baglio with its ancient drinking troughwhere visitors can avail of the clear cool water.

The village name originates from the Greek Skopelòs (the rocks) or from the Arab Iscubul which describes the majestic and picturesque stackswhich are covered in the Mediterranean vegetation that emerges from the sea.

There are two towers near the tonnara, one situated on a small headland and the other embedded in a rugged cliff. They ensure the surveillance of the area and its protection from danger emanating from the sea.

A real delicacy is the pane cunzato of Scopello. It is a local bread, dressed by fresh tomatos, salted sardines, olive oil, local cheese, oregano.

In Scopello a diving centre offers guided immersions, including nighttime excursions to the most interesting areas of the coast where shipwrecks and mysterious caves can be found.

The Zingaro National Park is a stretch of coastline along 7 km. It overlooks the Gulf of Castellammare and Speziale Mount is the highest mountain in the area ( 913 meters). The reserve is about 1600 hectares wide.

The park is interesting in every season for its turquoise sea, beautiful crystal clear bays for swimming, beaches of pebbles and sand, the caves and tunnels, cliffs overhanging the sea, houses rural.

It is possible to discover the endogenous Mediterranean vegetation by accessing its paths either from the South-East entrance near Scopello village or from the North entrance near San Vito Lo Capo. There is a third access on the upper part of the park. The natural reserve contains many kinds of plants and tree-like palms, carob trees, prickly pear, caper, fennel, agave.

Various species of birds live in the park such as peregrine falcons, eagles, wild gulls and pigeons, hooded crows, magpies, goldfinches. Among mammals, you can meet rabbits, foxes. Among the reptiles, there are vipers and two species of lizards.

Aproximately 5 kilometers from Villa Playa is the Fiume Caldo and thermal springs (this name means Warm River). The water is hypothermal alkaline, sulphurous mineral and is often used for therapeutic purposes; mud baths are also good for the spirit. Baths in the river or in the thermalsource; which is sorrounded by luxuriant mediterranean vegetation; are free. Close by there are also two thermal stations or spas.

One of these thermal springs is in Gorga districtwhere the water has a temperature of 51 C. and a canal which brings the water and mud to the thermal stationsituated in an ancient restructured mill where there is an outdoor swimming pool, saunas and mud baths area..

Further up the Fiume Caldo visitors can reach the free baths area in Ponte Bagni district where they will see the historic springs of Segesta adjacent to a very small lake surrounded by tamarisk, olive trees and reeds. The temperature isusually around 44 ° C in summer. Relaxing in a bath in thermal water surrounded by natural habitat is an exhilarating experience all the year round. Nearby the river leads to a small canyon with rock blocks and some small waterfalls. The riversubsequently flows into the canyon where in the summer season itis again possible to have free bathing... As visitors traverse the banks of the river it is possible to observe high vertical walls with colors from ivory white and pink. Near here is the second thermal station which also has an outdoor swimming pool , jacuzzi and the Regina cave (with a Roman vault), which is a natural sauna in a cavern on the river's bank.

For potholing lovers the caves of Mount Inici (1064m) are very interesting with deep ravines and underwater lakes which reflect the lights of the cavers resulting in extremely interesting images.

The formations are of particular beauty, delicacy and variety, hanging stalactites, stalagmites, high columns and spectacularly brilliant casts of calcite crystals. It's a magical view and a very rare natural spectacle.

The visit to these beautiful but fragile environments will only be allowed in small groups to ensure they are not damaged by the negligence of its users.

The subsection CAI of Castellammare del Golfo organizes speleological trips to the Abisso dei Cocci – Ramo dei Laghi into Monte Inici.

"Wonderful holiday"

We have spent a wonderful holiday at Villa Spiaggia with our family. The house is situated in perfect place just a minute from the beach and it is furnished by everything we have needed for our comfort vacation (dishwasher, aircondition, microwave oven, dvd, wifi...) We have also apprecfiated the warm approach of hosts Anna Maria nad Rosario. We felt in love with surrounding garden and having rest in magnific garden living room. We often visited the fish market in Castellammare and prepared bought fresh fish in outside grill. Amazing!!!! We will come back next year for sure!!!!

"Beautiful villa, excellent location, warm welcome."

Very pleasant villa interior, though we were seldom inside as the sun shone every day. The exterior gives plenty of sun or shade, as required, and is well supplied with seatingand a good bbq and dinin… More

"Great spacious family friendly villa opposite beach."

We stayed at villa spiaggia playa for 4 nights in early April. It was perfect for us, a family of 5 (3 boys aged 7,4 & 1). The garden which encircles the villa but majority is at rear was totally enclosed (no escape routes for children) and the property feels very secure with gated entrance. There are a few steps outside but our 1 year old had his big brothers to help him as well as us.
We had a couple of BBQs, we went down to the harbour in Castellamare del golfo about 4pm and bought fish directly off the fishermen ( "that one's still moving" exclaimed our 7 year old, he then gutted and prepared the catch with the guidance of daddy at the outside sink handily situated next to the BBQ.)
The villa is clean and spacious inside and the kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. Modern feel to decor. Anna Maria (owner) was lovely, she had supplied us with some local food to start us off including some of her own organic lemons. Recycling bins provided. Deposit returned no problem straight away at end.
Nice big dining table outside near BBQ & lots of seating, sun loungers in garden.
The temperature at the beginning of April (7th-12th) was about 20/22 degrees. Most days we were able to wear shorts, t-shirts, had to slip on jumpers occasionally, with jeans & jumpers in evening. The Italians were all wearing winter coats which we found very funny!
Wild flowers & lush green mountainous landscape everywhere this time of year, beautiful.
The area was very quiet as the season hadn't started yet, which we really liked, we were practically the only tourist there. It would be a completely different atmosphere in height of summer, can imagine quite a buzz. Own parking space within property which would be essential in peak season as we were told it gets very busy as villa right on seafront. If we went back we would choose a similar time or maybe May/June late Sept/oct. For us personally I can imagine July & August being too busy - but we are a young family, & you might want it lively and busy!
Top tip for the area was the natural hot springs in Segesta Terme. Find on google maps, cross cold river to get to in beautiful gorge surroundings.
You need a car to get around to make most of Tranpani region.
We stayed a week near Cefalu after this villa and whilst that area is amazing in other ways Trapani had better beaches and
we preferred this villa.

"The best holiday"

A few days past since we have returned from the sunny Sicily! It was gorgeous and relaxing trip in a very conveniently located place in a very smart house! The villa impressed us with its size, interesting design and how fully deviced it was! But the most important that it was located closely to the luxoryous sunny beach and pure warm sea. Only fifty steps and you are on a free chaise-longue under an umbrella. In the evening you can spend time in local cafes, which you can find either on The Playa or in Castellamare. It very convenient to use touristic train at night to visit Castellamare and get back. Or you can cook the food by yourself on barbecue and have a meal on the big table in the garden. In a 5 minutes of walking there is a supermarket where you can buy all necessary food products. We visited Palermo twice by the bus, which stops not far away from the villa. The trip takes 1-1.5 hours. The Internet access was important for us and it was both in the house and the beach. Particularly, we want to thank Anna Maria and Rosario for their hospitality. They are very nice and considerate people who care about their guests and support them with all necessary information. And we were glad to get acquainted with such a good people!
Family from Russia (3 persons).

We returned to Castellammare, choosing self-catering accommodation rather than a hotel this time, having my 20 and 18 yr old children with us. Anna Maria's lovely house more than met our requirements and expectations. The garden in particular, is very special with superb views over the mountains. The house is very well equipped, with a lovely family feeling. Anna Maria was so kind, waiting for us to arrive late at night, and leaving wonderful fresh fruit, bottled water, local wine and an easy to cook supper for us. The beach and sea are so close, beautiful to swim in. Castellammare town is a short walk, bursting with great restaurants and bars, and good value boat hire for pottering along the coast/marine nature reserve. Watch out for expensive fuel though.
