The Sicily region
Sicily is an island full of strong contrasts, a land rich in history and culture, lively, enticing cities of art, ancient fishermen’s villages where time seems to have come to a standstill and amazing natural wonders, beautiful beaches and islands where you can relax surrounded by crystal clear waters.
The island is a crossroads for populations who were completely different from one another, who have all left permanent traces of themselves in the island’s culture.
Castellammare del Golfo bursts with energy and activity during the summer months. This coastal town roughly translated as Sea Fortress of the Gulf, sits in the famous gulf of Northwest Sicily. Its harbour is dominated by its castle, claiming both Arab and Norman heritage, which is one of the town’s main tourist attractions with an interesting little museum (free entrance).
There is a wonderful array of restaurants, pizzerias and bars here where you can enjoy a hand-made gelato or a refreshing Sicilian granita.
You can also catch a boat excursion including a trip that sails around the peninsula allowing you to see the national park of Zingaro and the hilltop town of Scopello from the sea.

"Atmospheric, immaculate villa rental"
The location of Villa la Vela is superb. Nestling under grand hills and mountains, often topped by the remains of Moorish towers, the light changes dramatically during the day and into the evening. If you prefer water to crags, then leave the villa gates, cross the country road, unlock your private gate, step through a tropical bamboo corridor onto an unspoilt and private rock platform overlooking a secluded bay studded with breathtakingly shaped rock pinnacles. Now, here is the clincher. I have never swum in a crystal clear sea before (nor any sea for that matter), so when my kids stuffed a mask on my face and then a snorkel into my trembling mouth, it was all a bit of a shock - nothing like the shock of seeing all of the fish, sea urchins, anemones and even an octopus face-to-face! I was the one who was hooked!
But sorry, I digress - back to the villa. Bright, spotless, spacious, well equipped and beautifully private. Well cared for as well, unlike some rentals. The smashing, carefully maintained kidney shaped pool for lounging around was popular with everybody. Take note of the large, marble, shaded front sun terrace, if you are a pale skinned individual like me. If you really must continue browning, as the sun goes down, then whip round the back where its little brother awaits you, complete with a really nice gas barbeque. The main lounge is a happy place to unwind and all bedrooms blissfully quiet and comfortable.
You can also rely on the descriptions of nearby amenities, be they extremely pretty villages, good olive oil or decent spaghetti vongole.
The Villa La Vela is a true haven. The local key holders are genuinely helpful. I would also like to add that everyone thought it was great value for such quality of accommodation and space. We loved it.
