The Sicily region
Main cities to visit:
PALERMO A crossroads between Eastern and Western civilisations since time immemorial, Palermo has been indelibly marked by the diverse cultures which have passed this way. The charm of this city of a thousand contrasts owes much to the atmosphere that prevails. The old town with its historic centre, particularly the magnificent 12th century cathedral, is testimony to a rich past. Not far from here is Monreale with its Benedictine Monastery and a splendid Duomo.
LIPARI-STROMBOLI Dominated by a fortified citadel, Lipari is capital of the seven volcanic Aeolian Islands. Lipari is deservedly famous for its architectural and natural beauty as it embraces some stunning panoramas, pumice stone quarries and a “Castello” built on the ruins of an ancient Greek acropolis. Not far from here we will be sailing round the forbidding yet impressive Stromboli, an active volcano which regularly erupts wreathing its summit in smoke.
TAORMINA Taormina stands out against the slopes of Mount Tauro in the heart of a picturesque and charming location. The town’s alleyways and gardens tumble down the mountain to the Ionian Sea. Its ancient Greek theatre is the second largest in Sicily, after the theatre at Syracuse, and offers a magnificent panorama with the majestic Mount Etna, its lava flows still smoking, in the background.
SYRACUSE Syracuse was one of Sicily’s most prestigious cities and at the height of its splendour competed with Athens. Visiting Syracuse is like stepping back in time to plunge oneself into the fabulous history of Sicily. Since its role as a central city of ancient Greece, numerous civilisations have followed one another to these shores, each leaving their mark. Arabs, Romans, Normans, Byzantines and Spanish influences give Syracuse its extraordinarily rich culture, a mosaic of perfumes, colours and flavours.
Trapani / Castellammare del Golfo area
CASTELLAMARE A typical Sicilian village in the heart of the Trapani province, this former fishing port has been transformed into a charming seaside resort which has not lost touch with a rich historical past. Castellamare was the main port for the Phoenician towns of Segesta and Erice, the ruins of which have been uncovered at two excellent archaeological sites. Both towns, one of which was dedicated to Aphrodite, feature some beautiful temples as reminders of their glorious past.
