The North East Brazil / Bahia region
Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia, was the first major port and the capital of colonial Brazil for almost two centuries. The city lies between green tropical hills and broad beaches along the bay of Todos os Santos. It was built on two levels with administration buildings and residences constructed on the hills; forts, docks, and warehouses on the beaches. To this day the city is still divided into upper and lower cities. From 1500 to 1815 Salvador was the nation's busiest port. A significant portion of the sugar from the northeast and gold and diamonds from the mines in the southeast passed through Salvador. It was a golden age for the town; magnificent homes and churches resplendent in gold decoration were built. Many of the city's baroque churches, private homes, squares, and even the hand-chipped paving bricks have been preserved as part of Brazil's historic patrimony. In Salvador, more than anywhere else in the country, the African influence in the makeup of Brazilian culture is readily visible, from the spicy dishes still called by their African names (caruru, vatapa, acaraji), to the ceremonies of candombli which honour both African deities and Catholic holidays, to the capoeira schools where a unique African form of ritualistic fighting is taught. Its population is around 2,250,000 inhabitants.
Trancoso area
It’s worth arriving in Trancoso, a chic little town on the north-east Brazilian coast about 300 miles south of Salvador, at night-time. A preservation order means the Quadrado, the broad village green that makes up the town’s historic centre, has almost no outdoor electric light. Instead, after sunset, the boutique bars, shops and restaurants that now occupy most of the one-storey artisans’ houses on either side of the grass put out gently flickering coloured candles on their tables and window sills, giving the place a wonderfully fairy-tale feel. Above you a carpet of stars shines down and, perched on top of the cliffs near to where the Portuguese first landed in Brazil 500 years ago, a simple, slightly dilapidated church basks, with just the slightest ecclesiastical aloofness, in its (permitted) electric floodlighting. Starting at the bottom of the cliff, the sand stretches for hundreds of kilometres in either direction and, however busy the town seems to be, you can pretty soon find a quiet spot to yourself. Trancoso is a small historic, Indian village with a serene atmosphere, nice restaurants, shops and lounge bars. It is mentioned as a transcendant place and compared with Ibiza, Goa and Bali. The houses on the Quadrado have, as much as possible, been kept in their original form. With so much outdoor beauty, it's not surprising that in Trancoso you spend very little time indoors ... even when you are indoors.
Softly, softly under a Brazilian sky. By David Baker. Published: November 25 2005, Financial Times.
COSTA DO DESCOBRIMENTO Trancoso is located on a foothill from where it is possible to see beautiful beaches, cliffs, rivers and coconut groves. The temperatures are very pleasant, thanks to a cool ocean breeze most of the year. Besides the natural beauties, the town has also a great cultural and historical legacy to offer to tourists. Trancoso is also the place for trance and chill-out music and is seen as a trancendant place as Ibiza, Goa and Bali. The town used to be a small village founded by the Jesuits, who imposed their habits on the local people. Thanks to this domination, the city has a very specific architecture with a church surrounded by houses built very close to each other, forming a big square called ‘Quadrado’, which is one of the most valuable historical sites on the Discovery Coast.
Around Trancoso you can find several protected parks and vegetation. You will find deserted beaches and can reach Caraiva by car or bus trough APA (Área de Proteção Ambiental) Caraiva-Trancoso. National Parc Monte Pascoal can by reached by car within 4 hours (see owners website MAPS).
Porto Seguro is the main city of the area. Here you can find important institutions like the Townhall, Airport and Hospitals, beside a lot of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops. Just above Porto Seguro you can find Cabralia, the location where Brazil was founded by Cabral.
Arraial d'Ajuda, between Porto Seguro and Trancoso, is a busier and more touristic village with bars, restaurants and discothecs.
Caraíva, just under Trancoso, is a village located inside of a Pataxó indigenous reservation between the river and the sea. Some people think it is an island, but they make a mistake, because it is a peninsula. If you stay in Trancoso, you have to visit Caraíva.
For diving, there are several rifs. The Recife de fora en Recife da Coroa Alta are close to Porto Seguro. Are you more into travelling you can go to Recifes Itacolomis at Curumbau or Recife dos Patachos at Cumuruxatiba (see owners website MAPS - HOW TO GET TO MONTE PASCOAL, CUMURUXATIBA AND CORUMBAU)
How to get there
Trancoso is located in north-eastern Brazil in the state Bahia, 40 km under Porto Seguro, and can be reached by Porto Seguro International Airport. Porto Seguro International Airport is the closest airport at 40 km distance. It takes approximately 45 minutes by car, 1 hour by bus to travel to Trancoso.
It is possible to book a flight direct to Porto Seguro from Amsterdam, Lisbon and Paris, although most connections pass through Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo or Belo Horizonte.
There are flights from Amsterdam with KLM via Sao Paulo, or TAP via Lisbon and Salvador. TAM has flights from London to Porto Seguro via Sao Paulo and Salvador, as other companies. TAM GERMANY has flights from Frankfurt via Paris to Sao Paulo.( See owners website)
You can rent a car at the airport or in the centre of Porto Seguro at HERTZ or LOCALIZA. From Porto Seguro you can take a taxi to the ferry (Balsa) across Rio Buranhem to the other side and take a taxi or bus (ÁGUIA AZUL) to Trancoso in about 60 minutes.
If you ask us in advance, we can arrange a taxi for you. (see RENTAL RATES).
A taxi directly from the airport to Trancoso costs around 150 Reais (€ 55). A taxi to the ferry (Balsa) in Porto Seguro around 20 Reais (€ 8). In both cases you will have to pass Rio Buranhém by ferry for about 6 Reais (€ 2) to take a bus (ônibus) (viação Águia Azul - see timetable) or a van to Trancoso for 5 Reais (€ 2).
Casa da Vanessa is situated near the beginning of Rua Principal and many vans and busses pass. At Rua Principal are several bus stops. If your are by bus, get off just after Posto da Saude (First Aid) at the beginning of Rua Principal. Take Estrada dos Macacos on your left after 50m. After 100m you will find the villas on your left hand side.
