Our family spent a week in Quinta do Ferro in August 2011. We were 4 adults with 4 kids [though the house can sleep many more] and our biggest mistake was to book the quinta for only one week! We are lucky enough to spend each year over 12 weeks on vacation, always renting houses, trying to aim at unique places. Staying a week or two in each house, we go through MANY vacation rental properties each year - but this one is SPECIAL - very special. Spending time in Quinta do Ferro is like traveling in time while still enjoying all the modern comforts, like WiFi, microwave, TV, etc. The house is beautiful and so are the grounds, and the surrounding area, villages and little towns, seem to belong to another time. There were barely any other tourists (in August, mind you) and locals seemed relaxed as well as friendly. We visited several castles, hiked in nature and even traveled one day to Spain (Ciudad Rodrigo). The hosts were charming and the house came with breakfast (delicious) and dinner (on demand) -- which was a true delight (at very small price). The grounds had fruit trees and strawberries (that we could pick), its own river and small lake, a huge swimming pool with pond water and so forth. Highly, highly recommended!!! Both adults and kids (5-7 years old) loved it. Another extremely important note about the area: it is August in Europe....most vacation places are crowded beyond measure...here in this area of Portugal, you are practically alone - delightfully alone! |
