The Loire Valley is described as the Valley of the Kings - it is famous for the wonderful châteaux (castles) built from a white stone called Tuffe. We are close to Chenonceau - the most visited of all the châteaux. The Valley is also known as Le Jardin de France and has a perfect climate for growing salads and fruit, and especially grapes, the local wines are drunk the world over and include Sauvignon, Gamay, Cabernet France, and Chenin as well as the famous sparkling wines or 'Methode Champenoise'. The weather is very pleasant, it can be hot and sunny in mid summer and crisp and clear in mid winter. Come in September to see the grapes being harvested. You will spend your holiday with dayds out to the lovely white castles built by the french kings; wonderful meals to remember, wine tastings and interesting mediaeval towns; visit Chinon where the first French parliament took place, Fontevraud Abbey where Henry II and Richard Coeur de Lion are buried.
The Tours / Francueil area
All the year round visit the castles and vineyards and excellent restaurants. Many Châteaux do a son et lumiere in the summer.
The third weekend in November is Touraine Primeur - the new release of the Gamay wine.
July 25 is the foire au Basilic et de l'Ail - Basil and Garlic fair in the centre of Tours - great fun.
There is a Jazz Festival in September. Wine fairs throughout the year. Special son et lumiere events at the local chateaux.

This cottage has been beautifully restored and renovated and is well equipped with up-to-date equipment. Previous guest reviews indicated that the bikes provided were much appreciated (we didn't use these). The feather bed offered as an additional extra was a revelation! I'd never tried a feather/down mattress topper before and am now getting one immediately for the bed at home. The location is at the centre of a small village, directly on the roadside - this is clear from the photo on the website. It is also at a near 90 degree bend at the bottom of a hill so the traffic can be disconcerting if one if sitting out on the patio and it hurtles towards you. Quite a few trucks and buses early morning and later afternoon (there is a school nearby) which are noisy. No problem at night though as the road is quiet, apart from garbage collection night. There is a cafe across the square and a supermarket less than 100m away. However both seem to be closed on Mondays - possibly Sunday as well, but we arrived early evening on Sunday so not sure. In fact due to the long lunchtime closures that seem to be the norm in France we never actually had the opportunity to use the local supermarket at all. Worth bearing in mind as these opening hours also apply to some of the larger supermarkets in nearby towns. Given that the proximity to these facilities was my reason for preferring this cottage to the ones in a more rural location, it turned out to be the wrong decision. Response: Glad you enjoyed the feather bed - we have three of these and thinking of buying more as they are clearly very popular. Comfortable beds are our priority - see reviews from other of our cottages. I appreciate our guests may find the traffic a bit close but actually its not that busy and the terrace is south facing and secluded by a good fence, and only the side of the cottage is next to the roadway. The terrace leads off the sitting room and kitchen so ideal for meals outside. The little supermarket is one of the best - it belongs to a local butcher and provides best quality meat, veg, bakery etc. A new bakery is being built next door to the shop. Worth coming to try it out - it is a really lovely cottage and well equipped. Ann |
